Cold Air Intake Question

Will an aftermarket cold air intake make much difference over the stock cold air setup on my 2010 GT Premium?

it would be great to hear from somebody with direct experience on this

my understanding is that it won't make as much difference as in previous years, since the 2010 factory intake is pretty good already

I have the Roush CAI on mine, but I can't say if it made any difference, since it was on there when I bought the car

i have the Roush CAI on mine too and i didn't really notice a difference but it did make my exhaust sound a little deeper. A CAI and Intake will make the biggest difference on our cars but it would have to be a CAI that has a bigger inlet tube than whats on our car already.

Which one are you planning on going with?

Ohhhh and welcome to TMS

Use the search feature there's probably 10 threads...

I have the Steeda CAI- which required a tune.

you can check out this article: http://www.musclemustangfastfords.co...ake/index.html

Which has a good write up. And the results were pretty close to what I noticed. Improved and noticeable power above 4k RPM. Is it earth shattering, no- but it's there. Ford improved the 2010's CAI which is where they were able to rate it 15 hp above the 05-09's. If you don't think a CAI is worth it- try a tune. There's a lot of reputable companies out there.

Good luck

Thanx for the reply's, and thanx for the welcome Onelildude!

I think for the moment a CAI would not give enough bang for the buck to be worth it. I'm going to add a K&N filter for any improvement to be had for a smaller amount of money and look into a good tune or an axle back to wake up the exhaust some as a first major performance buy.

I put a JLT with Bama tunes on my 2010 GT about a month ago and I can tell you it is very noticeable. The car pulls much harder now. The throttle response is also better. so far I have only used the 87 octane tunes and it feels stronger than the 06 GT I had with the same intake. The exhaust is also a little louder (noticeable). When I had my 06 I had a few people ask what exhaust I had and I had stock exhaust.

There's definitely a huge amount of difference that will come from a cold air intake setup and a proper custom tune on a 2010 GT. The stock airbox was better than previous years of the 3V, however there is still room for improvement. The more modifications that you add to the car, the more that the aftermarket intake is necessary and the more that it is doing for you.

Any of the top intakes out there (JLT, C&L, Airaid) are going to be not only top-of-the-line in terms of fitment/quality/construction, but they're going to net about the same amount of horsepower.

So, if someone wanted to avoid a tune (because they don't want any issues with the service dept. if they ever have to take it in) and just stick to a CAI, is it worth it? and if so, which CAI

This Roush intake: http://www.americanmuscle.com/roush-...y3292011airaid is a great no-tune required option. You can check out the customer review if you want, they've all been pretty positive. You can see the quality/fitment of that intake is really nice.

Honestly, though... I would recommend a good intake that requires a custom tune and getting an SCT X3. It's going to be night/day difference over the stock tune and stock airbox. You can return it back to stock in the matter of 15 minutes, and the dealership CANNOT tell that the car has had a tune. It's worth every penny to spend the extra money. A good Bama CAI/Tuner combo like this one: http://www.americanmuscle.com/jlt-sc...2011jltcaitune is something I can honestly say everyone is satisfied after they install it and try it out!

With the combo kit, you'll get better throttle response, better mileage, more HP/TQ across the entire power-band, etc. If you're an auto, you'll get firmer and faster shifts, as well. If you want, feel free to give our Bama custom tuning team a call and they can talk to you a little bit more about it and give you some recommendations!

They're here in the building Monday-Friday from 9AM-5:30 PM EST at 888.226.9764. You can speak to one of our custom tuning team members directly with no middle-man!

check out the curve that 2010mustangGT posted -- it shows a 13 HP gain from the Steeda CAI (probably one of the best) AND a tune. I'm betting that most of it came from the tune.

At least I hope it did, because I'm about to buy a tuner with tunes from AM, so if the 13 HP was half CAI and half tune I am going to be disappointed.

(actually I am mostly looking for throttle response so I don't think I will be disappointed)

thanks for the input. I was looking at the Roush and will likely go that route. as I get closer to the end of the warranty period, then I'll probably do a tune.

I'm starting to lean towards the Roush CAI as well. Money is really tight right now and the tune will have to wait a little bit.

The Roush CAI has great fit/finish but like i said don't expect too much from it. I like the looks of it but didn't really notice a big difference on the butt dyno. Once i get a tune then i will be good to go

Yeah, the tune is definitely worth a lot of the power. The intake will get you some gas mileage, and also better support future mods as the stock box would have become more and more of a restriction.

I have been looking at the combo cai/tune as well but have been worried about violating the warrantee. Will this void the warrentee?

Where does the Steeda cia fit in? Is it as good as the jlt, c&l and airaid? I am thinking of ordering one along with a tuner soon for my new 2010gt. Thanks
