3.73 Gears for 2010 GT
I am trying to have 3.73 gears installed on my 2010 Mustang GT. I called my local Ford dealer and they told me I would need a new Carrier to replace my 3.31's with 3.73's. They quoted me $2500 for parts and labor. Everything I have read tells me that I only need the gear, pinion and new bearing. Can anyone confirm the new carrier requirement?

You can use your same carrier. Your dealer is wrong or just needs to fatten his bottom line. Or the service adviser worked at a gm dealer in a previous life. I would check some performance shops in your area. They can probably do the swap for less. Fords arent that difficult to set up as long as you use ford gears you can normally get away with the original pinion depth shim.

Do not pay 2500 for a gear change.. I was quoted $700 ish by most shops.. In the end I bought the parts for 200 bucks online a did it myself with some friends and family help.

A Man Just Needs Some....
Absolutely DON'T pay $2500 for gears. $2500 will buy you a whole new differential. $700ish is probably the going rate. Talk to a few performance shops.

ring and pinion only, along with a new pinion bearing is what you need to upgrade.
replacing the carrier would be required if you were going with a full blown rear diff upgrade -- when i put my 93 together i did pick up a new carrier only because there were a lot of miles on the car and i was putting down 3.5 times the horsepower. a safety measure from experience, but surely not required for your case.

I was quoted just over $800 for P&L, which included shims if needed. Also was assured no warrenty issue if they did the work. The carrier wouldn't need replaced.

I was Going to have my gears replaced with 3:73 untell I realized mine came with 3:73 in it. But my guy wanted $300 cash to do it. I ordered the parts and all brand new came to $305. That's included the bearing kit, and the new 8.8 adapter and the gears. So right around $600-700 should be a decent price. My gears were ford racing if that matters to u.
