Williams in Talks with Cosworth

The latest speculation from Europe claims that Williams could switch to Cosworth power as early as next season, with talks already being held between the engine supplier and the Grove squad.

The necessity would emerge in case the rumored Sauber acquisition by BMW does happen by year’s end. Hinwil owner Peter Sauber is keen to sell his squad as long as it is for an established automaker, and the Munich company is reportedly unsatisfied with the results so far obtained from its partnership with Williams.

Ever since returning to F1 in 2000, BMW has powered Williams cars to just 10 victories, this despite its engines being constantly regarded among F1’s most powerful. The German manufacturer has a contract with the Grove team until 2009, but would be willing to buy itself out of it to acquire Sauber, since the majority owner of the Swiss outfit, the Credit Suisse bank, is eager to sell its 65 percent stake on the team.

Williams has allegedly held talks with Cosworth and Toyota, but would prefer to partner with the former Ford subsidiary, now owned by Champ Car co-owners Kevin Kalkhoven and Gerry Forsythe, since it is believed that the current supplier to Red Bull and Minardi is well ahead in the development of its new-for-’06 2.4-liter V8 units.

Wow, formula 1 rumors are worse than the SVT rumors. I think it would be great to see a Cosworth in a car that is capable of constantly winning races. However, over the years, I've come to realize that the press loves to speculate about anything and everything in F1. BMW also keeps threatening to leave Williams in order to try to buy out the team. It will take a lot more than that to phase Frank Williams. I say let them go. The Toyota's have been producing more horsepower than BMW anyway. Also, with a team like Williams using Cosworth engines, a lot more development work will be done to make them even stronger.

Cosworth would be spreading itself too thin if it went with Williams as well, plus, I guarantee the Red Bull Racing has a contract barring it. It's interesting, rather like the rumoured 8.9L jet powered Rainbow Cobra

F1 rumors are widely erratic and have no basis......Red Bull is staying with Cosworth since they have a contract. Plus, it netted them 3rdor 4th or something in their first ever race; why give up a good thing?

Because of cost for next season. Cossie wants ~20M a year, and Honda (so the reports say) want ~10M.

I don't think that Williams' problems reside either under the engine covers, or in the driver's seats.

Don't know who you're talking 'bout, but Schummi Jr. actually went to Toyota. :P

Disagreements aside, I had no idea there was somebody else in BG that follows F1.
