Richard Petty open to Dodge or Ford for his NASCAR Sprint Cup team's 2013 programme
Richard Petty says there is currently no decision about which manufacturer his NASCAR Sprint Cup team will represent in 2013, despite the current Ford squad being favourite to take over as Dodge's lead outfit. Dodge has yet to announce its 2013 Cup line-up after Penske - its main outfit since '03 - decided it would switch to Ford from next year.
Petty gave Dodge some of its best years in NASCAR in the 1970s as a driver, winning two Cup titles and 37 races for the brand. The NASCAR legend also fielded Dodge Chargers with his squad, most recently until 2008, when his team was known as Petty Enterprises.
Richard Petty Motorsports currently runs Ford Fusions for Aric Almirola and Marcos Ambrose, with technical support from Roush Fenway Racing and Roush-Yates engines. The team won at Watkins Glen last year with Ambrose.
Petty believes Dodge is yet to make any firm decisions about the shape of its 2013 NASCAR programme, but left the door open to a return to the manufacturer, while also acknowledging that he is in talks to extend his Ford deal.
"Right now, [Dodge] are pretty confused," Petty said. "They got a plug pulled out of them and weren't really expecting it. I would imagine they're going to have to sit down and have some prayer meetings to figure out really what they're going to do. But I don't know.
"We'll consider going anywhere to make a living out of this... Right now, we're still up with the Ford deal and we're going everything we can to win races with them."
Besides Richard Petty Motorsports, Dodge has few good options for 2013 as all mayor rival outfits are currently tied to multi-year deals with Chevrolet, Ford or Toyota.

Even if they switch, Marcos will leave as soon as his contract is up. He did the same thing at JTG Daughterty when they switched to Toyota.

Petty wouldn't be saying that if his team were really "the favorite" to take over as Dodge's leading team. I'll say it again: Petty doesn't have the resources to be a flagship team, the only way he could be is if Dodge built a factory team from scratch and slapped Petty's name on it. They may yet do that, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Considering the fact that Dodge has no teams yet for 2013, they can offer Petty a lot of money to switch to them. Petty might not be the flagship team, but its the best Dodge can get since everyone else is already signed by Chevy/Ford/Toyota.

Petty came away from Dodge awhile back to go with Ford because of a lack of support from Dodge. Even Pensky didn't have any competitive teams or cars for the longest time! Bad move to go back to Dodge!

Back then Petty wasn't Dodge's priority - Penske was.
If Petty switch back to Dodge now - it would be just Petty & Dodge, nobody else.
And Petty will never be #1 at Ford, Roush will always be Ford's #1 team plus Penske is coming in 2013.
