why not automatic
Not all of us want to shift for ourselves. Especially those of us who bracket race cars at the drag strip. Quite a few late-model GT500's running 9's and 10's in the 1/4 mile that have been converted over to automatic transmissions.
The new CobraJet is now auto. I would anticipate once the GT500 reaches Corvette like pricing (2014) we may see a trend to auto trans (6-speed). You gotta figure at one point the price is going to be high enough nobody that age wants stick.
As long as the car stays in the price point and aimed at a demographic of "younger" performance drivers or focused on The Mustang Faithful, "truists", it will remain stick.

Ford probably doesn't want the GT500 to become the next Corvette in terms of owners. If they put an auto in the GT500 pretty soon to own one you would be required to show proof of your AARP card, silver hair, open buttoned shirt w/chest hair popping out and a large gold chain around your neck.

I would have to agree on the not having an auto that can cope with the weight and power of the car. Well at least one that can be wedged into the trans tunnel. Then again, there could be other reasons as well? Ford may well have an auto that works, but durability could be an issue when the car is modded (remeber, SVT's do have a fairly good rep for reliability when you lean on them with some serious power) or it could even come down to something like EPA mileage numbers.
The 3rd and 4th gen Camaro's had a very light duty rear end because the added weight of a stronger diff would have placed it into another unfavorable catagory.

For those that are arguing that the Corvette has an auto...
The standard corvette does have an auto or manual transmission, but the performance model, Z06, has always been a manual only. For most who buy that kind of car, want to shift their own gears. For those that don't need the performance model, they can get a lower model with an auto. Same goes for the Mustang... If Chevy ever releases a Camaro SS, it will also probably be manual only...

Ford has a transmission for the F350 Deisel don't they??? It puts down way more torque than the GT500, and I see no reason they could not come up with one. If they have an auto for the 5.0 Coyote, should be little more than upgrading the tranny to handle the 5.4L supercharged.

Those customers are in line waiting for the upcoming Camaro Z28, not an automatic GT500.....

And if it somehow did, it would be one heavy *****.
