Sync and text message notifications

use iphone 5 running latest firmware and a 2012 GT with sync without navigation. When I get a text I don't get an audible notification thru the phone or thru car speakers. The phone vibrates. That's great if its in my pocket but if its connected to USB or laying in the car I have no way of knowing if I got a text.
Is this normal or is there some update I'm missing?
Thanks for your help, Mike

Depends, is you car on "Bluetooth audio" when you get a message? Idk about non-nav cars, but mine will only transmit sounds from my phone when I have it streaming music from the phone. If I have the car radio on (not streaming for Bluetooth), the phone will just vibrate like you said.

It will not interrupt the radio to play any notification sounds.

Just drive the car and worry about new messages when you get to your destination

I'm self employed. Sometimes it costs me $$$ when I don't respond quickly

When I am streaming music form my iPhone I hear Text and emails messages coming in over the vehicle radio. In both my Shelby and Raptor. It even lowers the volume of what is playing to make the notification louder. Any other media source and this does not happen.

When I had a Windows Phone 7.5 it always notified me about incoming texts. It would even read the message out for me and then allow me to return a message, by voice using sync. Never had to take the phone out of my pocket.

For all the cool stuff Apple puts in the iPhone, this is a major miss.

It sounds an alert if I'm streaming via Bluetooth. I played with MAP settings and now, while listening thru USB etc I still don't get an audible alert but the music dims for a second or two. Strange but better than nothing.
I agree, whether its an Apple problem or Ford problem, it's a miss
