Ford Racing Debuts Twin-Turbo Cobra Jet Concept At The SEMA Show

While superchargers provide instant on-demand power, they can also sap a lot of power, especially at high boost levels. The 2.9-liter blower employed on the 2013 Cobra Jet uses as much as 100 horsepower to drive the supercharger. That’s power no longer available for acceleration.
Two turbochargers, no waiting
Fortunately, every internal combustion engine has a plentiful source of energy that normally goes to waste right out the exhaust pipe. Turbochargers harness the thermal and kinetic energy in the exhaust gases to drive turbines and compressors that force more air into the engine for a big increase in power without most of the parasitic losses of a supercharger.
“Ford has embraced turbocharging technology and a lot of our production engineers are working with the technology on a daily basis, so we have a lot of knowledge,” said Deneweth. “We decided to apply that knowledge to the Mustang Cobra Jet to showcase what our engineers and suppliers know how to do.”

Turbocharger design and release engineer Dave Born joined the Cobra Jet team after working on the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 for the F-150 to help make this concept a reality. “When done right, turbocharging is just as good as or better than supercharging,” Born confirms.

There's a new racier pony car making its debut at Sin City's SEMA Show and it's called the Mustang Cobra Jet Concept.
It's a prototype version of Ford's factory-built turnkey drag racer that replaces the 2013 Mustang Cobra Jet's 5.0-liter V8 unit that's available with or without a supercharger with a new iteration of the V8 featuring a pair of turbochargers incorporating the brand's EcoBoost technologies.
According to Ford's motorsports division, while superchargers provide instant on-demand power, they also require a lot of power especially at high boost levels. As an example, Ford says that the 2.9-liter blower fitted on the 2013 Cobra Jet uses as much as 100hp to drive the supercharger.
“When done right, turbocharging is just as good as or better than supercharging,” said Ford turbocharger design and release engineer Dave Born.
“To overcome the biggest perceived drawback of turbocharging – the lag – we’ve selected the smallest possible turbos that will give us the airflow we need,” he added. “We’ve also got some other enhancements to help improve the responsiveness; we have very low inertia and very low internal friction.”
Ford did not reveal the horsepower numbers, nor if and when the twin-turbocharged Mustang racer will head for production.
In addition to the newly developed prototype engine, the SEMA Show Cobra Jet project car also adopts Ford's new black-and-blue racing stripe livery.

It looks really good but does this mean they couldn't get enough power with a supercharger? Or did they just want to progress with their turbo systems?

If they can get 200hp from that 1 litre triple cyl then... how much can they get from a 5 litre? Much smaller than the 5.8 and too many inherent advantages to list.
And to top it all off GM screwed up with retaining that architecture.

Needs to be more Astony
Pure awesome right there. And further shows Fords direction with the new GT500/Cobra model. no direct injection there yet but they still have a couple years before the ecoboost 5.0.
