Paint & Body
I posted the pic of the bottom of the car in another thread but will list it here as well.....The bodywork is complete on the body of the car and we have our first prime....next we block sand the body to make sure it is perfect. The body wasn't in bad shape but there were a few dings and dents that needed attention. We also re-repaired the repair work done by a collision shop from a deer impact where the front bumper shock supports were not properly welded in and we properly straightened the front frame rail where it had evidence of that impact....this is an area often ignored because of the difficulty of reaching it with the engine still in the car.

Now here are the shots of the Block sanding progress.....this ensures the body is straight. This is a very time consuming process because it is all done by hand.

Guide coating is time consuming and most production shops don't even do it....using red as a guide coat on a car that is being painted red means it will cover a lot easier. Many red colors are translucent and require many coats to get proper coverage.
In this case I chose to use a leaded formula which will cover MUCH better than an unleaded formula. Most paints today do not even have a leaded formula but this car is already MUCH harder to paint due to the bottom of the car....all the angles, nooks and crannies you have to get paint into just get's to be more problematic if you don't have a color that covers well.
Red is also the most expensive pigment and color.......ONE gallon of JUST the color....no clear, no other material....JUST the basecoat color itself is $350!! It is going to take probably 2 gallons of color to do the entire car.

Next series of pics are the actual painting....a team of 3 of us burned the midnight oil and spent this past weekend painting the chassis.....LOTS of pictures to come.....
Here we are with the car/rotisserie positioned in the booth giving it a final go over and running over the car with tack rags. This car being a non metallic color means we can paint it apart....we will be painting the entire car, top and bottom at once which means there will be NO tape lines...a perfectly seemless paint job.

Here is the basecoat color......it is really nothing short of a royal pain to paint the bottom of a car like this....the subframe system gives it's own challenge in getting paint to cover everywhere. Using a leaded paint formula helped but it still required a lot of coats to get proper coverage.

Remember this is just the color phase of painting a base/clear paint job....the basecoat when dry gives a satin type finish. We then prepare to clear the car. During this whole process there were 3 of us in the paint booth....we had to rotate the car to get every area painted and we also used the extra eyes to look everything over to make sure we didn't miss anything or have any thin areas.
We ended up using the FULL gallon of paint just to cover the entire chassis.

Here it is Monday morning and the car is rolled out of the booth....This color REALLY pops out in the sunlight....you almost can't look at it for long without seeing nothing but red when you look away!
Now If I could only get my shoes back white again....but I think it would be easier to just go buy another pair
