Water drainage holes in the doors - what are those plastic things?

Has anyone else noticed black plastic doohickeys clipped into the drainage holes on the doors (at the very bottom towards the front and rear)?

Were these removed during PDI (are they still on your car)?
Should I remove them?

Pic.

It doesn't look like it can be easily removed. There is a clip for the forward drain and rear drain (rear drain shown in photo) of each door.

On my 2000 Crown Vic, there are drain holes placed in the same exact areas as the Mustang, except with the Mustang there are plastic clips placed inside of the hole. I've also noticed water draining out of that area on the Mustang when washing the car.

I can't think of any good reasons to have the clips there other than to prevent debris from entering the drainage hole from under the vehicle. That also means debris cannot exit the drains if it falls in from the top (window channel).

LOL, that's because they come off really easy. Didn't see a need for those clips to slow draining so I took them off.

How do they come off? Did you simply tug on them? I don't want to scratch the paint.

One was so loose it practically fell in my hand. I just pulled the rest of them off. It's only little plastic tabs behind them and they pull right off.

I just went out and removed all 4. They are very flexible and held in the drainage hole via clips on the sides. Simply flex them (bend them outwards) and it will come right out. I promptly waxed the hole with Klasse AIO.

Are these plastic tabs definitely supposed to be taken out?

They came out very easily and I've never seen them on other cars. You want the drain holes large enough for debris to fall through. The clips would prevent stuff larger than a granule of rock salt to fall out.

When the car goes concourse in 20 years, you can sell those clips for big bucks on eBay!

I went out and looked, and the one closest to the hinge on both sides was already gone, so I removed the other one on each side. Went down to BS with my buddy at the service dept., and he said they are supposed to be removed......

I had one in each door also. took them out right then.

That spot is usally good for a few more drips every time you wash the car and close the door.

I also removed those clips the first day I had the car. I couldn't see the point in preventing the water draining..
