Trouble Refueling?

I have a 2006 V6 and today I went to fill it up and had trouble getting it to take the gas, thinking it was something wrong with the gas pump I went to another gas station and the same thing happened. It will take about two seconds of pumping and then the pump shuts off like the tank is full. I have not had any problems with this until today, the car has 19,500 miles on it. Any ideas?

there has been lots of talk about this problem. Next time try turning the gas nozzle upside down and pumping gas.

The problem is the venting through the right side of the tank. Somewhere you have a clog in a vent, could be dust, a cobweb, a kink in a vent hose, etc... I figured out the problem and took everything apart, cleaned it out, and put it back together and have been trouble free for the last couple years. I'll see if I can find the thread.

I find that a slower pump rate is the best move, excepting the cleaning out of the vent. Go half throttle. Sure, it'll take a little longer, but it'll work better, less aggravation.

At least, that's what I've found. When I hit a really fast gas pump, I find I have to put it on the lowest speed to make it work out.

But I still don't have to put the handle in upside down.

Just my observations.

I just tilt the gas pump nozzle 90 degree angle and presto. I've only had this problem maybe 5 times in 4 yrs.

This does appear to be related to the speed of the petril pump. Seems here in the UK, most of ours are very high speed, so most of us suffer the problem. Pulling the trigger half way so it fills slowly seems to work best for me, but others swear by having the handle at 90 degrees, or parking so the fuel filler is the far side of the pump so you have to extend the hose as far as possible.

At the end of the day though, the issue is the design of the fuel tanks as they are like saddle-bags. The problem arises as the fuel tries to vent from one side to the other.

find a good pump and use it only

After 5 years of living with this problem . .. . . I have found the problem is also related to the gas pump. I have a "favorite" gas station/pump that I will ONLY use on my 05 GT. NEVER a problem. But when I am away from my home . . . .. click/click/click/click . . .. . . 15 minutes to fill an empty tank!

Looks like it happens mostly to 05/06 cars am I right? Mine is an 07 and it has only happened once to me when my hand cramped in a funny position and I had to let go of the nozzle and bam!

Yes, this issue has tended to manifest itself the most in 05 and 06 models. I agree with the comments above. I've only had this problem on a couple of occasions in my 06 GT, but I still go half throttle when I fill up. There are a couple of new stations around where I live, and if you try to fill up the car going full out with the new pumps it will click, click, click. Inverting the nozzle also seems to work.

I went back to the same gas station a couple of days ago and it filled up like normal! Go figure!

I had major refueling problems with my 2010 starting with the 1st tank of gas I tried to put in it. Both not taking gas and fuel gauge reading a 1/4 tank off. dealer fixed the gauge problem right away, said there was "debris" blocking the float. Not sure what exactly it was. The car was in 3 more times over the first 2 months. the dealer replaced everything from the charcoal canister, vent lines, to filler neck etc., but couldn't get it. To make a long story short, ended up being the rollover valve. Haven't had a problem since

I've only had this problem when I'm topping off the tank when its a half tank or more. Its happened like 5 times in 5 years. I rotate the nozzle upside down and it works.
