Steering noise...

Anyone else hearing a wierd rubbing sound in the front end of thier GT while parked or slowly parking into a parking spot?

It is getting worse. I know I've seen it mentioned on this site before and some thought it was the rack.

I do know that it is not rear end making the sound. I used to have that problem as well but I fixed it with a bottle of Friction Modifier. This sound is definitley the front end and it is like a rubbing low frequency sound. You can just turn the wheel back and forth while stopped and hear it.

What is the deal with Ford? Starting to wonder if they can make a car without issues. If the steering rack is bad that is BS.

Sounds kind of like power steering? Is it very loud? How much do you need to turn the wheel?

My 05 GT does it,but not all of the time. I've decided to live with it, but please post if you find a fix.

I posted last fall of having a groan noise when turning the steering wheel even at a standstill. I had the dealer tech try to locate it while I turned the wheel back and forth. He could feel the vibration when touching the strut coil springs but not through the strut tower. I didn't have time to have it checked any further but will once I get the car out of winter storage. I think it's still a defective upper strut bearing even though they've been change under the 05-09-11 TSB already.

Just got that problem fixed by Ford. I have had a squeal coming from the steering wheel area for over a year and no one could ever find it. I took it back in and they finally found it. They had to call Ford and replace the rack and pinion. Make sure that when you take your car in, that they have the windows up, the stereo off, and are sitting still and turning the steering wheel all the way each direction. Then they will probably hear it.

Now to just fix the "marbles rolling around in the steering wheel when it turns" noise.

I have had this same issue for about 5 months now.
Have you been able to get this fixed?

No. But I have been watching this thread to be absolutely sure before I take it to the dealer.

Last thing I want is those idiots replacing unnecessary parts in my machine. Already had to have all four wheels replaced after they destroyed each one doing a basic alignment.

Imagine what they will do to it replacing a rack and pinion. Not sure I'd even want it back after that. Not sure if it will be safe.

Finally took the car in for the groan noise. They replaced the upper strut bearings again. Noise is now gone.

My power steering has been making noise also. At first it was a squeaking noise with the car sitting still, just slight movement on the steering wheel. Kind of the noise tires make on a garage floor. The noise got louder over a couple of weeks. Then the next symptom was a chirping noise when the car first starts up, like a pulley making noise. Today I noticed the power steering wasn't nearly as "assisted" as it used to be. So I popped the cap on the PS fluid reservoir and there is no fluid movement what so ever in the reservoir. I am suspecting that the pump and the rack have probably both crapped the bed. I know of several other people that have had the power steering go out on their Mustangs also.

Finally got the marbles rolling around noise fixed -- it was the cruise control buttons that were loose. They had to order a new cruise control button. The part actully sounded like a baby rattle.

Anyway, the noise is now GONE!!

I have got a noise, especially when car is cold and only when I turn the wheel to the right or left. I checked and have enough fluid...just turned 24,000 miles!

Any updates? I'm having a steering "groan" at slow speeds, too. I thought my 20's may have had something to do with it, but I know I'm not the only one with aftermarket 20's on my ride.

steering noise

my 06 gt with 14k miles was doing this also. i had to fight with the dealer and get ford involved as they claimed this was normal. They dfinally replaced the steering rack and the power steering fluid resevoir as the screen was clogged. also changed the power steering fluid out with a new fluid ford is using with a friction modifier. the problem is gone. the only problem i have now is the erratic fuel gauge (dealeer replaced pump and sending unit 6 times) and the hood rusting. Car is going back monday for the 2 issues. I seriously cant get over the amount of problem i had with this car!

I had that with my red '05, they replaced the steering rack. It was a squealing/rubbing noise at slow speed. Haven't had any noises from my '06. *knocks on wood*
