Why did the old clutches cause this groaning? I'm pretty darn sure that this groaning is due to the lack of friction modifier in the gear oil. I wish Ford would just source out a 75W-140 with friction modifier rather than require adding it separately.
When I installed a new set of clutches in my 8.8" T-lok, I did not add the 4 oz of FM and I heard a reptitive groaning while making low speed turns (whrr whrr whrr whrr whrr). I dropped out the dino 85W-140 (break-in lube) and added fresh synthetic Redline 75W-90 w/ 4 of Friction Modifier. The sound went away.

I may be having this sound. It does only happen after I've driven for about 15 minutes and then make a slow, tight turn into a parking lot.
What happens if I don't do anything and just leave it alone? Also, if they are replacing the clutch packs via TSB are they using the lighter-duty packs that KC mentioned in another thread? I know that was an older TSB but still wondering.

The spec sheet for the 2005 Mustang GT shows carbon fiber clutches in the T-Lok differential. I HOPE Ford is not swapping them out for the regular 31-spline clutches!
If it were my car, I'd add some XL-3 first before taking it back to a dealership. Chances are the folks at Visteon forgot to add the XL-3 or didn't add enough with the factory fill 75W-140.

Fixed the sound when turning but now something else
I had this same issue with my 06 GT. I took it in with the TSB and the dealer fixed the problem. However, now I have a noise that almost sounds like something is scraping against the rotor. You can't hear it until the car reaches 30 MPH. It's coming from the rear, and definitely was not there before this work was done. Anyone have any thoughts on what this might be?

I also have a new airy/windy sound in the rear of the car after getting the sound when turning fixed. The sound is like having a rear window open on a crack, and the sound intensity varies with the speed of the car. After searching the back seat area and trunk for a source of the sound and finding none, I then removed the rear seat cushion, which only made the sound more apparent.
The car's back at the dealer along with a copy of TSB 05-20-2 which loosely describes the symptoms.
I 'll post when I know more.

I just got back from my dealer. I went out for a ride with the technition who worked on the car and he said the sound was normal and is probably from the new parts. He claims that it should quiet down after the parts break in. Not sure I totally believe him, but for now I guess I'll wait a few hundred miles and see if anything improves.

Hissing sound in back of car
I had TSB 06-12-11 performed a few weeks ago to fix the “sound when turning†problem. That sound was fixed but I could hear a new hissing or airy sound right after the TSB work. It kind of sounded like a window open on a crack in the back of the car or a speaker hiss which varied in intensity with the speed of the car. The service advisor verified the sound and agreed something was not right. After conferring with a regional technical expert, they decided to verify the work done on the TSB repair by taking it apart again, verifying the specs, and refilling with appropriate friction modifier oil and 75w140 oil. The new sound seems to be fixed. Here are the service tech repair comments:
Inspected and removed rear cover and axles, measure backlash at .007-good. Checked pattern of ring gear and pinion. Pattern is perfect. Removed carrier and inspected carrier bearings and axle bearings. No problems found. Installed all parts and filled fluids. Test drove.
The service advisor and I then drove a brand new 07 GT (less than 20 miles) as a baseline for comparison, then drove my 06 GT with 6600 miles. My car was actually quieter than the new one.

I asked that question too but got a "I don't know" answer from the service advisor.
I have to assume either the initial TSB work was not done correctly (both initial and followup work were done by the same tech) or the additional lubricants along with the clutches soaking up lubricants from the first repair solved the problem, as metroplex suggested.

I looked over the TSB and it called out for a 2003 part # for the clutch pack kit. I did a google search and found some pickup truck website that called out the same number for a clutch rebuild kit:
3L1Z-4947-BC $90 list
It sounds like it is just a regular 8.8" 31-spline rebuild kit and not the carbon fiber clutch kit that was supposed to come with the original 05-up GT traction-Lok.

new rear end making same noise
Well after about 1500 miles the new rearend started making the same noise when turning. I Went back to the dealer and told them that before we tear it apart and put the new clutch pack in it why don't we try changing the fluid and put the friction additive in it. They agreed to do it under warranty and it's been about 300 miles and so far good. Or maybe it's just wishful thinking.

When my 06 was fixed for this noise (May 2006), the TSB was not out on the 06 (only the 05's) but my dealership fixed it. Since that time the TSB has been added for the 06's.
You would have thought they would have corrected the problem for 07, but I guess not..
Since the repair I have never had the noise again.
