Rattles, Rattles and more Rattles

My '07 GT is driving me nuts with its rattles. My "old" '04 Mazda 3, at half the cost of the GT, was rattle free. Why is it that one Ford product (Mazda) can be built tightly but the other (GT) can't?

My newest rattle is in the seat back of the front passenger seat. When it isn't occupied, and over any road surface other than those smooth as glass, it rattles. All I have to do is push on the seat back (or head rest) just slightly towards the door and it goes away. Changing the seat position (forward, back, reclined, or upright) has no effect. Pushing on the seat back either towards the front or the back has no effect. It isn't the seatbelt or any of its hardware. It isn't the headrest because it rattles whether or not it is installed.

Has any one else had a similar problem? I'd rather not dive into the internals of the seat without the experiences of others who have suffered the same symptoms.

I have one or two rattles in the dash that developed at about 5k miles or so. I'm taking it back to the dealer sometime this week. They'll definitely fix it.

I hope you are joking or there was sarcasm in that statement!!! Anyone that has ever owned a Ford AND brought it into a dealership for rattles, weird noises, or other odd vehicular behavior should know that it will become an endless battle. Unless the rattles are causing parts to fall off or major mechanical issues, you may have to live with it. If you take it back to the dealership, they will do one of several things:

1). Actually try to diagnose the problem
2). Steal your parts while "diagnosing" the problem
3). Damage your parts, while stealing some parts, all in the name of "diagnosing" the problem.
4). "Fix" the problem for 3 days and then somehow the rattling will come back

Usually #3 or #4 happens. This has been our experience at about 4-5 Ford dealerships spread out over a distance of 600 miles over a period of 30 years, so it isn't just limited to a local region or time.

BTW by stealing parts, I mean they will do it in a very subtle manner. For instance, while changing spark plugs #1-4 on a 302 V8 with the thermactor assembly on the passenger side the dealership will say they changed them and actually pocket the 4 new plugs because they didn't feel like removing the thermactor assembly. Another time, they were trying to fix a carburetor issue and broke the choke-pull off diaphragm vacuum nipple and blamed it as being the problem while charging us for a new part.

Theres also no:5, after 3 and 4 they will wash and wax your car, thinking this will make you happy and leave swirl marks all over it!.... Good Luck !!

Yeah, I'm with them... I will only take my car in if I absolutely have to... a rattle fix will not justify the ultimate resulting aggravation. I'm sure that if you investigated the problem yourself, you'd be able to come up with a simple solution. Felt placed in friction places will usual remedy the problem. Besides, that what they're going do...

I started hearing a rattle in my car a few weeks ago coming from the air vent closest to the passenger door. I just closed the vent and it stopped. Even if its open, its nothing a loud radio can't fix.

Put the windows down and listen to the V8, that will get read of the rattles. Long live American cars . Who wants to listen to a European 4 cylinders with no rattles.

Can't beat Mustangs price. V8, 300 bhp. Fantastic looks. Fantastic name. For what? just over $30000. You are looking at $70000+ for similar car in Europe.
So again few rattles is worth the $40000 savings.

Your frustration is understandable Wes, but I agree with everyone, don't go to the dealer for a rattle or two. I've heard of people coming home from that with even more rattles cause the dealer "tech" took the dash apart trying to fix it, and can it really be as tight as what the factory gave you after that? Your best bet is to have someone else drive it while you chase down the rattle and when you find it, plan a fix. I've got one occasional dash rattle after 8700 miles, but it's not bad. My music is usually so loud I can't here it any way.

I kinda knew when I looked at how the built with pride sticker was applied so sloppy I figured there would be a problem or two. Whats really sad is some of the 07's have the same problems the 05's had.

6000 rattle free miles....
...noisey squeek brakes once in a while...
..dealer changed out the pads and was squeek free...
...just once in a blue moon....
...sloppy brake pads?

It's funny this topic was brought up. The first 18K miles were virtually rattle-free in my 2007 GT. However, within the last month or so, I've noticed at least three rattles; two coming from my dash and one coming from the driver-side door. I was thinking about taking it back to the dealer to have them fixed but, after reading some of these posts, I guess I'll just have to turn the radio up louder. Oh, well. I still love my car!

your dash rattles can be fixed in about 5 minutes doing the fix yourself. That is if they are the ones I am thinking of.
