How to fix a Rock Chip
How to fix a Rock Chip
Taking my car on the highway home from the dealer, someone kicked up a rock and hit my windshield. GRR! Anyway I have a tiny chip in my windshield about 1/16" across and very shallow.
Is there a kit you can buy to fix this? Or do I need to call a glass place to repair it? It's not big enough, deep enough or cracked, to warrant a new windshield. Basically just a little pockmark.
Advice is very much appreciated.

You might want to get the windshield replaced. A small rock hit my windshield on a freeway and by the time I got home there was a crack about a foot long. What I'm saying is that it might crack over time. My insurance paid for it (Allstate) and the glass company replaced my windshield at home in my driveway in about an hour or less. The replacment has the pony on it just like the original.
Same thing happened to mine the fist month I had her!!! ..after dealing with the trucking company (who's truck had dropped something off it's trailer) for 2 weeks and getting nothing back I just had it repaired.
For $50 bucks a repair guy came to my house, filled the spur, and it only took about 20 minutes. He was even a car guy so we BS'd about cars the whole time! I didn't have to deal with my insurance (my deductable is $100), the dealership, the possiblity of a leaking windshield, or the trucking company anymore... can't beat it if you ask me!

there are kits you can buy at walmart, but I would rather just pay the $50 to have a glass place do it professionally...I had the same problem last week. It takes them like 20 minutes to do it....and plus...they will gaurntee (sp) it not to spread.
Unless it is cracking, I'd leave it alone since it cosmetic. It'll probably happen again and you could get a new windshield installed for a cash price of 4 rock chip repairs. I'm never able to keep a car for long before a rock hits the windshield. I hate it when this happens, but I haven't seen an invisible repair.
It's basically a little pock mark, not a missing glass sliver, so I'm guessing I've got some time. However it is significant enough that I'd like to fix it when I get a chance. I guess I'll call a glass place just to keep water out of it (although it hardly ever hits freezing in this area of Virginia) so it doesn't freeze and crack the windshield.
If you have Glass coverage on the Insurance, check with the Insurance Company.
My Insurance Company will pay for a Windshield Repair Place to fix it,
Drill the Chip and fill it with Epoxy.
This is at no cost to you and is not on the Deductible.
They would rather pay for a repair then replace the Windshield.
The repair is almost invisible and stops any cracking.

If the chip cracks to the laminate between the glass, then they can drill and repair the chip, but if it is just in the surface above the laminate layer, then the resin they use may not even stay in place. It may or may not make the chip less noticeable.
I'd just take the car to an auto place that does repairs and see what they say.

Having never replaced or repaired a windshield before, if you use insurance for this will they jack your rates? ( I have All-State at the moment) Or do most insurance companies approach this as "act of god" type material that doesn't increase your premiums?
Check with your Insurance Company, they may do a Repair for Free to avoid paying
for a new Windshield. Make sure that a Free Repair will not affect your Premimum.
I am Pretty sure that a new Windshield will invlove your Deductible and Premimum.
Most Windshield Repair Shops will check with your Insurance Company to see if the Repair is Free
to you.

Safelite auto glass does rock chip repairs for next to nothing. They do good work also. Allstate pays for the chip repair. I think they will pay 2 times to have the same spot repaired, after that it is a new windshield and it starts to come out of your deductible. Hope that helps. Stop it before it runs on you.
