Fuel injector cleaner - yes or no?
Fuel injector cleaner - yes or no?
Last time I talked with a Ford parts counter guy, I asked about Chevron Techron and whether it was a good idea to add a bottle every so often. He tells me no - that Ford does NOT recommend it.
Having said that, lately I've noticed some of the gas stations around here, including Shell, Phillips 66, the gas has a strong sulphur smell which didn't used to be there. I have read that the higher sulphur content in the gas is bad for the fuel system - according to folks on different Mustang forums.
So, I guess I'm caught in the middle between crappy gasoline with more sulphur and a Ford guy saying it is a no-no to add a bottle of Chevron Techron occasionally to insure the fuel system doesn't get crudded up with the extra sulphur.
Opinions?

At one point on one of the F150 forums this was a topic. There was a problem with the fuel gage not reading full after a fill up. Some of the Ford Tech's on this site stated that a sulphur build up on the sending unit in the tank causes this. They also stated Techron would solve the problem.
No. Don't use anything other than quality gasoline. I use Techron only if I'm trying to diagnose a potential fuel issue and want to try and clean the system. Otherwise I just fill up with cheap grocery store 87 octane.
If you buy your gas at Chevron, the Techron is already in it. It's good stuff, well-proven.

Attracting the "Big Three"
In 1970, after Chevron researchers developed a fuel additive known as F-310®, one of the Big Three automakers tested it against several other fuel samples. The engines running with Chevron's additive were so much cleaner, that by early 1973, all three companies had switched to Chevron gasoline to help them pass EPA's tough emissions system durability test.
In fact, the additive performed so well that it exceeded the EPA’s 1995 deposit control requirements – 22 years before they even came into effect!

When my car started having the problems with the fuel gauge at 16k miles, the service manager gave me bottle Techron and suggested I stick with Chevron gas. It actually worked for another 18k miles. On just about every occasion where I would use non Chevron gas, before I got to the bottom of the tank, I would have the fuel level data error. Half way through the next tank of Chevron, the error went away and all was well.
Of course, after Ford released the TSB on the new fuel sender (to address the sulfur problems), I loaded up on cheap gas and had my fuel sender replaced at 34k miles.
I still only use Chevron if I have a choice. In all my vehicles, not just the picky Mustang!

I have used Chevron gas since they put Techron in it and have never had any injector problems.I read years ago that Techron was the only additive that cleaned the injectors, since then there maybe others but its Chevron for me.
