Bushing Help for a newbie
Bushing Help for a newbie
Hey guys this is my first post on this forum. I recent bought a 07 deluxe gt manual with 85k miles and cant help but feel the experience has been cut a bit short due to its clunking noises. I’m assuming the noises are from the bushings all being shot and old and I would am looking to replace all the bushings (and shocks in due time). I’ve looked around online and can’t find anything that lists all of the bushings on the car to know what to buy and replace. Any help would be appreciated thanks.
welcome to the forum
There are a lot of bushings -- basically every moving joint in the suspension has one, so it isn't really practical to provide a kit for all of them.
Some of the bushings are very difficult to replace, mostly because the old ones are hard to get out -- if you value your time and aggravation, it is more efficient to replace the entire part with the bushing, in many cases. For example the front and rear control arms; you can buy the control arms with the bushings already installed and that makes the job a lot easier. In other cases it is fairly easy and more practical to just replace the bushings, such as the sway bars.
But you should try to narrow it down to which bushings you will replace first. Get the car up on a lift or jack (also support with jack stands for safety) and inspect the bushings, also shake the wheels and sway bars to see if you can hear the clunking and rattling. The sway bar end links and the upper strut mounts can be culprits for rattling and clunking also.

Welcome GT. If your 07' still has all the original suspension parts on it, your most likely need to replace a few things not just because of mileage, but age too. I am in the same situation with my 06' with 72k on it. You can tell by looking at most of it and doing what Bert said. With the front off the ground, grab the front wheels and see if there is any play. Most you can see if they are worn/dry rotted by eye. For the front control arms, if you see yellowish stains on the outside they are definitely bad. That is from the fluid leaking out. Here is the list of items a mechanic checked on mine. I may be missing some items. The asterisks are what I needed to replace.
Both front control arms**
Front sway bar bushings**
Front sway bar end links**
Inner and outer tie rods**
Front struts**
Front strut mounts**
Front jounce bumpers
Motor mounts
Engine belt**
Transmission mount
Rear lower control arms
Rear upper control arm**
Rear shocks**
Panhard bar.
Rear jounce bumpers
You can Google and Youtube all those so you know what you are looking for when you look under it. Also as Bert said, probably better to just replace the parts instead of the bushings. Just to give you an idea of what age does to the bushings, my front strut mounts are aftermarket and the factory ones have been in a box since 06'. They are basically brand new but the bushings are as hard as a rock because they are 18 years old.
