I don't see a link, but there's a special screening in a couple hours out here that I will be attending.

Just getting home. I don't want to spoil anything, but IMO I thought the movie had some good action scenes, but sucked as movie. There was 1 racing scene in the entire movie

IMAX is just a branding anymore. No different than any other large screen digital presentation. The only exception are the standalone buildings from the early 90s that were IMAX cinemas.

Here in Cleveland we have a 60ft wide digital that we "branded" XXDLP and don't charge extra for. People paying extra for IMAX converted auditoriums or Cinemark XD are getting lubed up real good...

The Rave IMAX will be a true IMAX cinema. They're actually having to construct it and it will be done just in time for Fast Five. And none of the other theaters will have the car from the movie. Not even in Hollywood.

You sure it's not a conversion? IMAX doesn't build their own theatres anymore, most are the largest auditorium converted to match the IMAX-MX model which is significantly smaller than true IMAX.

Hmmm...it's a conversion, but it's going to take a month. I remember seeing the true IMAX at the Space and Rocket Center, and Rave as the room to do one full blown.

I'll get in touch with the theater and see if it's MX or the real deal.

With how hard shooting IMAX was back in the day, I seriously doubt that even with the advance in technology that these newer IMAX films are 'true' IMAX. Hence why the IMAX format may be easier to replicate now.

I'll talk to the theater at length at this. I didn't think how much I'd be fielding this question, but now that I am, I'd like to know the deal too.

I talked to the theater and asked them about their IMAX setup as well as researched it online.

The original IMAX was an expensive and film-based theater. The projectors and film reels weigh hundreds of pounds. There's no way Rave will have this system. This is what the Space and Rocket Center has in their IMAX theater as they make the film reels visible to those waiting in the theater lobby.

This theater will probably be a digital version of IMAX, but according to wikipedia, "One big disadvantage is much lower resolution than normal IMAX film, estimated to be about 12,000 × 8,700 theoretical pixels or 6,120 × 4,500 actually discernible pixels.

IMAX digital currently uses two 2K-resolution Christie projectors with Texas Instruments Digital Light Processing technology alongside parts of IMAX's proprietary technologies. The two 2K images are projected over each other, producing an image that is potentially brighter 2K digital cinema.

In early January 2010, IMAX announced a 3D digital camera, with expected availability in 2011. The camera is expected to reduce production and projection costs by eliminating the film."

I believe this IMAX 3D system is what Rave will be installing as I saw the unopened boxes for the Christie projectors in the lobby area last night. Their IMAX will be a 3D theater. The screen size is still HUGE, just like the original IMAX, and the conversion is being done by the IMAX company itself, so there will be a standard of quality expected of the IMAX experience.

Now, whether or not I want to see Fast Five in IMAX 3D will be a different story. Although, it will be surreal to see the cars on the big screen with that much realism and then go outside and see the real ones. I might just have to try it just for that experience.

IMAX 3D is no different than most Real-D 3D setups. 2K is currently the industry standard for digital cinema (2048x1080) and uses a 3-color DLP system.

I'm glad you did your reasearch on the topic though. People tend to buy into the "IMAX" name without knowing what it means anymore. With that said, be aware of other possible digital cinema locations as the true difference will be screen size alone.

Be wary of IMAX 3D (or ANY 3D) that is not truly filmed in 3D as it will usually result in a horrible conversion (ala Clash of the Titans or Last Airbender.)

My final thought is on the cost. Up here in Cleveland, Regal chains are charging $17 per ticket for the IMAX auditorium which is 12ft SMALLER than our big screen (labeled "XXDLP" for no reason what-so-ever) which has no additional fee. The average person will not be able to differentiate the IMAX "experience" from any regular digital auditorium.
