Question MIGHT This Be The 2008 Bullitt Engine...?

Just found this online (originally reported by Autoblog using Ford, BlueOvalNews and the Detroit News as references) >>

For the past few years, one engine has garnered more attention than any other: Chrysler's Hemi. Between garish badging and a sublimely ridiculous TV advertising campaign, 'Hemi' has become synonymous with large displacement, American power. Ford wants a piece of that branding action too and has re-introduced the Boss 302 V8.

Originally called the Hurricane, the newly developed V8 underwent a name change to distance itself from a certain disaster off the Gulf Coast. The project was originally shelved in 2005, but Mark Fields decided that the development costs were necessary to compete in a market rife with clever branding strategies.

The 5-liter V8 will make anywhere between 340 and 500 HP, with the base block costing about $1,800 and a fully built unit running between $5k and $10k.

Although the engine is only available in crate form now, the new Boss will find a home under the hood of the 2008 F150, the Shelby GT, a 40th anniversary version of the pony car in 2009, the Boss Mustang, due the same year, and a few other special edition vehicles over the next three years.
Someone later in that thread offers these remarks >>

The PRODUCTION BOOS engine - has NOTHING in common with the crate engine. The production BOSS is a DOHC V8 loosely based on the current MOD/Triton engine - it will allow Ford to go to displacement at or north of 6.0l - and be more balanced in the ratio of bore and stroke - the MOD/Triton was too narrow - with small bore, and huge stroke, and maxed out at 5.4l. There have been no specs released of the production BOSS engine.
That COULD be our Bullitt engine, right there. The Bullitt definitely comes under the category of "...a few other special editions over the next three years."

Seems less and less likely that they will shortchange the powerplant on the Bullitt, especially with the Camaro and Challenger set to debut right around the corner.

I hear it isn't. Word is that the Bullitt isn't much more than the GT/CS.

Well the GT/CS is just a "badge & sticker" job (no offense to owners, but it offers no performance gains).

Did you hear why they pulled the debut from SEMA; more importantly, when they actually DO intend to debut the '08 Bullitt?

I do think it would be a big mistake to bring out such an anemic SE in '08 with Challenger and Camaro 'round the corner, and nothing to fill the enormous power vacuum between the GT and GT500 until '09 at the earliest.

well if the Bullitt isnt more than just a kit and stickers like the CS/GT then it wouldve been done in time for SEMA and there wouldnt be a need for a huge unveiling at the New York show, so I am hoping the reason for these two things is because it is something special

GT390 would be a good match for the Hemi 392.

Unless there's truth to the rumors that it was pulled from SEMA because Ford doesn't ACTUALLY have the licensing thing sorted out with Warner Bros./McQueen estate.

The Bullitt SHOULD be something special - particularly if it isn't due till '08. Who wants to wait another 15 months for a "badge & sticker" job with a lousy 10 horsepower boost?

Pay attention, Ford: Don't squander the money you're paying Warners and the McQueen estate - not to mention the Bullitt/McQueen legacy - on some watered down, underpowered "special" edition that no-one really wants.

Maybe they didnt want to debut it at SEMA cause all the cars at the SEMA show were all tricked out with aftermarket go-fast stuff, and the Bullitt is just a Green Mustang GT with Spoiler Delete....didnt want it to get upstaged????

I hope I'm wrong

Upstaged? Had it been what it was supposed to be it would have been the runaway star. Mustang fans usually approve and fall in love with the most recent offerings, as long as there are performance upgrades.

How do you think people would have reacted if a Bullitt would have been introduced with the GT500 drivetrain less all the flashy cosmetics?

From what I have heard it will be engine, suspension, and handling upgrades. And some color differences. Haven't heard anything on the no-show at SEMA other than some rumblings that there are still issues with WB and the McQueen family over the naming rights (AGAIN!! )

We shall see.

Yeah, but the REAL question is: what kind of engine upgrade?

I have tried to find out what they have up their sleeve but when I get to the engine area they start getting a littel tight lipped.

Only two possible reasons for that:

1) It's gonna be a big disappointment and they know it, and from everything they read on sites like this they don't want to deal with the backlash, or;

2) It's gonna get something special.

Or #3, choosing the color is proving to be a difficult task.

I think the researchers found that Comp Orange and Screaming Yellow are high on future Mustang owners charts.

I have sources that tell me engine upgrades are intake and different heads. Possibly around 350 HP.

That level of performance can be simply accomplished on the current GT without much a problem or high costs. If that is Ford's idea of a SE they should not make any plans for ticker tape parades.
