Bullitt Gearing?
Bullitt Gearing?
If I'm not mistaken the Bullitt has 3:73 gears.
How many of you owned a 05+ GT with 3:55 gears? I would like to know what you think of this gear compared to what you had on the other car?
I had 4:10's but I felt they were alittle deep for my taste and would be interested in impressions between 3:55's and 3:73's. Some people say it isn't worth doing.
BTW I have a 5 speed manual trans~

OK, I will try. My '06 had the 3.55 gears and you are correct, the Bullitt has 3.73.
I can tell you there is a marked difference in what feels to me to be torque. I can plant myself against the seat back if I punch it at a much lower rpm in any gear with the Bullitt very easily, whereas with my '06 I would have to be up around 4-5K rpm to do the same thing. On the other hand I can still take off on snow/ice smoothly by being mellow on the gas pedal.
BUT, is it really the gears? There is also a different tune and slightly more HP. One thing I definitely notice that's different is there is no throttle lag, period, at all. That itself could be part of the reason for what I describe above?
Maybe you can educate me some on how gears are supposed to change the ride and then I can tell you more....hurry up before I forget the '06

I don't know if I can "educate" you Lynda about gears but the 3:73's should give you more of a kick in the rear when you punch it. The 4:10's were awesome but 1st gear is almost useless and I am thinking the 3:73's would be a better all round gear for city and highway with some added performance.
Most cold air kits with good tunes will remove the throttle lag that you were speaking of. Did you have these on your 06? If you didn't I would say you might have a harder time comparing the 06 GT to the Bullitt.

I have an 05 GT with 3.55's- CAI and tune. Because of weather (snow) my Bullitt is sitting in my garage, so I haven't had a lot of drive time with it.
But so far I think both cars feel about the same. The Bullitt handles MUCH better, but the 05 I think has a bit more punch in lower rpm's- but that's due to the aggressive tune.

MustangLynda is right. There is absolutly no throttle lag in these Bullitts. The Bullitt is an extremely responsive vehicle and is a great pleasure to drive. The throttle and steering is crisp. I don't have any experience with 3:55's in the s197. I had them in my 88 GT but comparing the 08 Bullitt with 3:73's to the 88 GT with 3:55's is comparing apples to oranges. If you want a little more kick to that pony then change the rear to the 3:73. I would say it's the best bang for the buck. Easy for me to say... I went from 2:73's to 3:55's. It's actually a performance upgrade that you notice right away unlike something else like mufflers or underdrive that makes you THINK your Mustang is a little bit faster because you added 2 horsepower. You know?
"The following is the complete list of all upgrades for the Bullitt 3.73 axle:
1. Higher strength differential case material
2. 9x13 differential gear tooth combination (GT is 10 x 14)
3. Differential gears receive premium shot peening
4. Anerobic adhesive added between the differential case and ring gear
5. Higher capacity head bearing (with shim)
All other components in the Bullitt axle are common with the base GT 8.8" axle."

Thanks, Is that information actually officially published anywhere by Ford?
Do you have any information on any differences in the GT500 axle assemblies?
