Ive owned an 01GT and 06GT and #352 Bullit and they all did that when cold. I think its a trait of that tremec tranny. Learned to let it warm up to operating temp before shifting aggressively.

"Grinds"? Does it really grind or are you just using a colorful adjective?

The Bullitt is #5 manual trans mustang for me and they ALL did that when they were cold - VERY stiff and have to deliberately and slowly put the car in gear until it's warm. Actually I find this one has been smoother when it's cold than the others.

YES! My 08 GT just started grinding about a week ago when it's cold. I warm the engine up for about 2-4 minutes every day, but the for the first few shifts, 3rd gear will grind.

At first I thought it was just my lazy application of the clutch, but then it still happened with the clutch fully depressed.

One way I found to avoid the grinding is to manually move the shifter from 2nd to 3rd (as in, move up, move right, move up), instead of pushing the shifter into 3rd in one smooth motion. I noticed the smooth motion will result in grinding when the tranny is cold.

On my 01 GT, I tried using Mobil full synthetic tranny fluid and it helped get rid of the grind about 50% of the time, now I just let it warm up a little.
Nothing wrong with your car Joeyabs its common with the Tremec Tranny

How cold is it where you are?

Have you tried double clutching when it's cold?

Yeah, my '08 GT does the same thing. I've heard the GT500 had the same problem and they found out there wasn't any lubrication on the splines. It's a different transmission, so not sure if it's the same exact issue, but it certainly sounded like the same symptoms.

For the few days the tempurature got above freezing I noticed the shift was fine. But especially at the 5 below F we had this morning it's pretty crunchy. And it is definitely a crunch. The whole shift lever jerks and you feel the crunch in your arm at the same time you hear it.

Just let the shifter hover in N for a second before completing the shift. I'd not want to see the effects of that crunching after a couple hundred applications....

Royal Purple Syncro Max may help with this issue. I am planning on putting 4 bottle of the purple stuff when I reach 1000 miles.

My 03 Mach 1's Tremec trans was tough to shift when cold. When it got too tough, I was able to get it rebuilt under warranty due to a TSB that was specific to that year/model trans (that likely doesn't apply to other years/models). The Tremecs are good, strong transmissions that withstand a lot of abuse, but the design doesn't work well when the temperature drops!

It's a shame there's this issue with them, because in all other aspects the Tremec in my '08 GT is much better than the 6speed Gertag in my old '04 Z4 3.0i.

Well, they are made in Mexico. Maybe they are just accustomed to a warm climate.

The trannys bound for Canada must be a much hearty trans because I've never had that problem.
