Question for you GT500 owners

Can you tell me what muffler comes on the GT500? Does it come from the factory with the regular Mustang GT mufflers, or does it come with the upgraded GTA's from Ford Racing?

Not sure if they are the same as the regular GT's, but they definately not Ford Racing mufflers. Pure stock, the car is pretty quiet

Agreed. I drove my fiancee's mothers GT-500 a few weeks ago and was suprised at the quietness. I looked at the mufflers, and they sure look like the stock GT mufflers, but I couldn't see any part numbers on them to compare.

Thanks, I saw some and they looked like the stock GT mufflers and not like what I saw on the Shelby GT (which I think is the GTA or another Ford Racing part - bigger tips and such).

GT mufflers will not will not work on the GT500. They are too long and will melt the rear valance (defuser). (too close). GT500 mufflers are fit to allow for clearance.

So the tips may be similar, but the GT500 muffler is actually shorter than the GT?

I haven't measured the GT mufflers, but the GT500's are either 16" of 16.5" long. The difference may be in the length of the muffler or the piping. I've seen the results of a guy installing the GT mufflers. Not a pretty site.

The stock mufflers for the GT and the GT500 are both 14 inches long plus the exhaust tips. They look identical. The difference, if any, might be the chambers.

The difference is not in the chambers. It is in the allowance for space from the back of the muffler to the valance (defuser). I know, I've been there and done that. I bought Bassani's for a GT and had to send them back and wait until the ones specifically for the GT500 were designed and produced. Different aftermarket mufflers may be different lengths but the ones for the GT500's are designed to leave enough space. Do a search at stangsunleashed, it's been discussed at length there.

That tells the story. Stangs Unleashed is great for parading and azzkissing Carroll Shelby and croanies but it's certainly not the final word on performance or technical advice.

Interesting...... I did not have any sort of melting problem with my GT500 rear bumper and GT mufflers. Space between the two was not an issue on my car. I ran it like this for three months on a daily basis. This is the only pic I have of this configuration.

I don't disagree with your thoughts of stangsunleashed but they do have some folks with extensive knowledge. They along with all forum sites have their challenging personalities.

Ninosport lists the same part numbers for the GT and the GT500 Bassani's. Not sure what that means though.
