Just placed my order!
I registered on this board in 04 thinking that I might buy the new mustang when it came out, but ultimately decided to wait to buy a new car. Today I placed my order for a shelby GT500. The dealer's going to sell it to me for MSRP, but because they're good enough to give that deal to whoever asks, I'm told that I'll have to wait in line for at least 12 months, possibly longer. I had to write a check for $1000, but I made them write in on the order that i signed that the deposit was refundable at any time prior to the vehicle going into production.
I ordered it in vapor silver with no over-the-top stripe, and added nav and satellite radio.
here's hoping they produce more of them this year than expected
this was at highland park ford in IL, btw.

Congrats on getting MSRP!
I've seen a Vapor GT500 with black stripes and it looked excellent. Have you considered another color stripe which would not show as much but still be there?

I really was of two minds on the issue of the stripe. It was either going to be in-your-face like red with white stripes, or something more subdued like the configuration i ended up ordering. I guess I like the somewhat-sleeper look.
Oh, btw, I also made him write in that if sync happened to be available at the time mine went into production, that it should be added. Probably wishful thinking.

Well, I'm more willing to wait than I am willing to pay a sucker tax, so we'll see whether or not I get a car. For now all i have is a pink piece of paper that i paid $1000 for.

Either way, uncle fluffy, keep looking and see if you can get one sooner. You will love it. They are awesome cars.
I haven't seen anything but black stripes on the Vapor. Is there another color available? Blue would be the only other color I would like on that base color. I would go total stripe delete on any of the silver/grey colors.

Judging from what I'm reading here and elsewhere, it seems like my dealer has taken my order and is banking on an '09 GT500 being made, and putting me on a list for their potential allocation of those... we shall see.

What the dealer is banking on is they have accepted a $1K deposit in exchange for a possible sale. IMO a deposit is a requirement based on a firm, guaranteed transaction not a possible one with ifs or buts attached. Have you considered what would happen to the GT500 prices if Shelby would kick the bucket during your wait? Regardless of his minimal contribution to the design and production of the GT500 it still carries his name.
The likelyhood of a dealer honoring such a commitment under unforseen circumstances is very improbable.

I've been around the car business all my life, and this scenario is bothersome. I would want much more concrete evidence of a car actually being built for me. A 12-month wait for any car is unacceptable. Does your order state that it's an '08 or '09? '09s are likely, but not confirmed.
I think all they've done is taken your deposit, taken you off the market, and they hope that maybe they can get a car for you at some point. That's way too iffy for me. If they don't get you a car, all they have to do is refund your depost and they're out nothing. You, on the other hand, are Shelby-less. If I were you, I'd keep looking. You may have to travel, or you may have to have the car shipped (as I did), but deals are out there if you look around. Don't overlook eBay. That's where I got my black vert for MSRP.

And AutoTrader as well. Select "Find Your Car" then "View more search criteria" to provide more specifics on the GT500. Make sure to include the distance from your zip code, model name, and narrow the price range to $45 - 60K. You'll be amazed how many GT500s are advertised there, many having been at the dealers for months which makes dealers a bit more realistic and inclined to negotiate.

I agree, I wouldn't sit and wait on this deal. Search the cold states. Cars move slowly in the winter in those areas. They may just be willing to deal now on one.

I'm looking at the March 2008 Motor Trend on page 48, which reads (in part) as follows:
"Our intel had the 500-horse, supercharged Ford Shelby GT500 pegged for a two-year-or-so life -- that being 2007 and 2008, perhaps rolling into 2009 depending on how well it sold, and what Shelby's own product plans were. Demand has proven strong, and we can confirm there'll be a Ford-built, developed, and produced Shelby GT500 version of the 2010. It'll get all the updates... plus its own more aggressive visage, rolling stock, etc. Its powertrain question is also unanswered... (t)he upcoming GT500 KR punches out 540 horses, and it's our hunch that this could become the standard Shebly powerplant."
I find this encouraging given my own situation.

Well, after much consideration of the issues brought up in this thread, I canceled my order and am going to look elsewhere. To his credit, the guy at the dealership was cool about it... tried to convince me not to cancel, but after a 3 minute conversation realized he wouldn't be successful and told me to stop by any time to pick up a check for my deposit. I would definitely consider doing business with them in the future.
