The Z/28's abortion and the GT-500's future.
With the plug pulled on the Z/28 Camaro, does the future still look bright for the '10 GT-500? Do you think Ford will do the same and stop production of it?
Don't think Ford will pull the plug on the GT500 just yet. Still much money to be made from it, and the initial investments have already been done. I think they'll keep building it as long as there is a buck to be made...
The SS is the GT fighter (LS3, 400+hp)
the Z28 is the GT500 fighter (LSA, 550ish hp)

I think the GT500 will stick around, but the big, heavy SC 5.4 might get dumped for a lighter, more efficient TT 5.0 to improve handling and gas mileage.
I know this has been said before, but I wish the they would just get rid of the whole Shelby name and just go back to the good 'ol Cobra. It was cool for about five minutes, and yes it looks great but its a big fat pig with a big fat dealer marked up price. They had it right with the Terminator and then it just couldn't leave well enough alone.
No they didn't the Terminator sat on the lots vs the GT500 and as much as everyone hates to think this, Ford is in the business of making money...I hate the ADM deal as much as the next guy though...
I agree that the Shelby name may have moved some units, but lets not kid ourselves here most of us in the know realize that this is just the next gen SVT Cobra and it is not going to be the collector car people think it will be. It seems the whole 05-09 Mustang gen is being focused on baby boomers who owned 60s Mustangs. As much as I like the classic stangs I hope Ford doesn't forget about it's 79-04 Mustang fans in the coming years. I say bring back classic names like Boss, Mach1 but also bring back SVO and SVT Cobra
I love the GT500, but it like the Terminator kinda underscored it's SVT heritage with its poor handling. Is the GT500 a better handling car than the Terminator? Sure, but not as much as people think. From a pure performance standpoint the GT500 is not leaps and bounds better than the Cobra. I have a neighbor who owns one and I am impressed but I am still a little disapointed with it's overall feel. In my personal opinion the biggest difference between the two cars is that the GT500 is more polished and refined but not much better of a performer. Sure it has a lighter clutch, quieter cabin, smoother shifter but in the 1/4 a terminator with 100 less HP will run neck and neck with it.
First and foremost I don't want you guys thinking i'm a jealous 03-04 Cobra owner. I will flat out admit that the GT500 is a better car in just about every way and hope to own one in a couple years. The platform is so much more advanced that it goes to show how great the SVT engineers were to do so much with what they had in such a dated platform in 03'. But, at the same time it shows how they kinda dropped the ball with what could have been with the GT500. This car should have had an IRS, a great job has been done with the the solid axle but it is inexcusable for a $50,000 sports car to not have one! I also feel for this being the ultimate Mustang trim some weight off of the front wheels. This, like the Terminator has always eerked me that Ford could'nt balance it better like the 05' GT or even the 99-01 Cobras.
My wish list for the 10' GT500 is that it is a couple hundred pounds lighter and has IRS, I think 500HP is more than enough. More power is great but a diet would pay off better than say another 50HP. Since people are willing to pay big money for these bump up the MSRP and offer an aluminum 5.4 instead of the heavy cast iron block, light weight wheels and maybe a little carbon fiber here and there.
Overall the base V8 GT model improved from the 99-04 GT in a much stronger way. Look through magazines and compare an 04 GT to an 05' GT and then an 04' Cobra to an 07' GT500. You would be suprised how well the Cobra holds up to the GT500.
My point is not to bash on the GT500, but to point out where Ford should look to improve the next generation GT500.
