WTH? Oil chgn @ home . . .

So what's the deal with the plastic shroud, four >tabs< or ,... no wait,... they're hex'd smallest head I've EVER seen. Anyone know size? My Mazdaspeed had larger metal bolts, these look / feel like plastic. My bud (cert. mechanic) said they're probably just tabs holdin it on and to give it a good jerk/tug to pop the shroud off. Anyone changed oil @ home yet? Advise please, thx in advance !

If you look at the bottom of one of the 11 Mustang's on it's side, there is a black plastic cover on the underside at the front. Did the 10s have this as well? Or is that a 2011 aero mod not on the 10s? Maybe that is what he is talking about. I could see maybe wanting to take that off for an oil change.

The cover is for aerodynamic efficiency. It needs to be removed to change the oil filter - it says so on it in big letters.

See those white lookin tabs?

Yep, the shrouds on both '10 & '11,... Has anyone completed an oil chg at home yet on their '10? Like the previous post said, the shroud actually has raised letters stating, "take off for oil change" (to gain access to filter). It also has has "1.9Nm" embossed? What, is that some sort of metric torque spec? Sizing > Nano meter? ...

Time for another

Thanks. This answers my question about oil changes/filter location from another post.

Nm = Newton meter which is the metric version for torque.
I believe 1 Nm = 0.74 Ft-lbf = 8.9 in-lbf

yup, no more quick runs to easy lube for me. Looks like I'll do it myself or take it to the dealer for that

If you even take your car to a place like that , just wait an egg head at some point will cross thread the oil drain bolt on the oil pan. I do it or Ford does it I'm 15 minutes Ford like 1/2 or all day

I thought it was 5.5 mm socket. They had same fasteners on previous Mustangs only the shroud didn't extend as far back.

My Trailblazer has a cover like that. During my last oil change, which I just started bringing it to my Ford dealers QuickLane, they informed me that my cover was missing. It could have fallen off, but my bet is that someone forgot to put it back on. I'd say to stick your head under there after each oil change that someone else does to be sure it has been replaced.

If you want it done right...

We had a Jiffy-Lube-esque place change our oil once last year because we were too busy and/or lazy, and they forgot to put the cap back on the oil fill hole. Complete incompetence. Do it yourself.

BTW, if I happen to get my 2011 GT before anyone here posts a good response to your question, I'll be sure to take a look at it, let you know what I find, and post some pictures to go along with it in case there are differences between yours and mine.

Well, from the original poster's perspective, the only reply so far that actually helps would probably be RMS70's first post with the pic, but even it doesn't give any information on how the panel is removed and reinstalled, which the original poster is obviously having trouble with.

Rear bolts not removable, time for another beer

Two front removed w/ 7/32, rear bolts aren't removable, just slide out shroud thru holes, you'll see, common sense prevails, they're designed to stay in place. Just a for-warning. Overall oil chg went fine, easy day. I have free chg thru dealer every 7500 so I'll do myself every 3000-4000 then take it to dealer @ 7500 and get the free tire rotation, car wash, inspection, yadaa, yadaa ...

They are all going to that underbody panel crap. Chargers have them, had one on the GTO (big heavy *** metal skid plate actually). It got tossed. If you want to keep them better have a shop you trust. Every charger I've changed the oil on had half the bolts missing or put on with an impact or air wrench.
