Well it's finally time to get rid of those lowsy OEM Pirelli tires. I am going to go with Continental ExtremeContact DW (not looking at all seasons), as I have had nothing but great experiences with Conti's on past cars. Having said that I am torn over whether to stick with 255/40/19's all round or put 275/40/19's or 35's on the rear, (BBP wheels), and 255's front.

I know many have gone this route and wondering if any regrets, benefits etc. Also anyone have experience with the Conti's.

 

Go 275 all the way around that way you can still rotate the tires and get more miles out of them. The handling will stay neutral as well as you will get way more grip.

 

Usually staggered setups use larger wheels in the rear to maintain neutral handling input. If you simply put a larger rear tire on the rear, same wheels, the sidewall will bulge more, allowing the carcass of the tire to float/move around more of the wheel, causing some weird and sometimes dangerous handling issues at speed.

So as Stevedotmil stated, replace all the tires with one size to avoid any weirdness.

Now prepare to see lots of people saying they have larger rear tires only on the stock wheels without any problems.

 

If you're sticking with the stock 8.5 in wide brembo wheels - you're better off with the 255s all around.

I'd only consider something w-I-d-e like that if a new set of wheels were in the picture. And 275s (at least for all 4 season NYC) is pretty wide...

 

I have the 10 spoke premium Brembo package wheels and I believe they are 9" width rims and 4 new rims are not in the budget right now plus I kind of like the one on their now

So I figure they will take 275's now deciding if all round or will 275 fronts have rubbing issues?????

 

I have 275/40's at stock height and have no rubbing issues.
And yes Brembo wheels are 9" wide.

 

Concurred, 275/40's will fit without any rubbing on the Brembo/Track Pack wheel, and concurred, the Brembo/Track Pack 19" wheels are 9" wide, while the stock 19" GT and CS wheels are 8.5"' and the 18" wheels are 8" wide.

 

What did you not like about the Pirelli summer tires?

 

Thanks for the input and I think I will go 275's all round, gets that little bit more rubber on the road!!

I can't speak for the Pirelli's on the standard 5.0 or V6 but the P Zero summer only tires on the Brembo wheels suck. I found them to wear very quickly and had to constantly rotate them. Just over half way through their life they became noisy, even more so on poured concrete surfaced roads, that annoying "whoo, whoo, whoo" from I am guessing the onset of cupping of the tread.

They really don't like it too cool either, below about 55f they felt slippy and you can feel the lack of grip. Rain traction by 1/2 wear was just not there. And yes I checked the TP's every week so it's not that I was running them too hard or soft.

I don't feel they warrent the cost of new ones.

 

The Pirelli's are noisy; they have a rating of 200 in the noise catagory. As far a wear, I had excellent results with them; I had over 48K on my set, and I could have squeezed another 2K if I wanted to push them.

I went with a set of Michelins this go around, and am very pleased with them. Much quieter (400 rating), and excellent tracking in the rain.

 

The Michelins are far superior to Pirelli but how the hell do you guys hear tire noise in your mustangs? I can barely hear the radio over the exhaust.

 

I can't wait to get rid of my OEM tires too then get a wider wheels and tires to fit 275 square.

wow...so 275's fit fine on the stock brembo wheels?? I'd like to see a picture of someone's car with those tires. Won't they bulge out quite a bit??

 

I think that will be an issue. Most 275 tires I looked at are measured on 9.5" wide wheels.

From what I've seen and heard the 275's look and run fine on the Brembos.

I think even 285's will fit on the Brembo's as an instructor at Summit Point runs 285 square on the Brembo wheels. Think also if you go square and you plan to track the car you would need a stiffer front sway bar to dial in oversteer.
