Where does the 2013 GT 5.0 get the extra 8 horsepower?

The difference is obviously not much but do we know what they changed yet?

I have skimmed most of the information on the refresh but I still haven't spotted the details on the motor changes.

One of the stories I read today said it was from engine friction reduction.

Hmm...like a different weight of oil?

fdjizm 11/15/11 04:43 PM

lol....

The 5.0 is already underrated. What's not to say ford is advertising the "correct" HP now?

cdynaco 11/15/11 05:21 PM

Probably a better tune - now that the aftermarket tuners learned the limits of #8. :dunno:

(kidding!) :jester:

It's just rated again. We all knew it makes more than 412hp. They're simply changing it on their brochures and advertisements. GM did the same thing with the 2012 V6 camaro. Made it 312 from 304 because the mustang has 305.

I doubt anything changed. It's always made that much anyways.

djclark 11/15/11 05:56 PM

Probably a tune.

Nocturnal'14 11/15/11 06:02 PM

My guess is they are installing the FRPP Pro-Cal tune into all the new mustangs....except the Skip shift delete part of it anyways.

Maybe a tad far fetched....but it would be cool if this was the case!

I tend to agree. Ford just pencil whipped it for 13. There wont be an once worth of difference in performance anyway. 420 just sounds better. Its just marketing.

Fazm 11/15/11 06:14 PM

my thoughts.... the 5.0 was sae rated at 416hp. you can advertise within 1%. 1% is 4hp. 416-4=412 old rating. 416+4hp = 420hp new rating.

just my opinion

97GT12 11/15/11 07:46 PM

As I stated in the other thread, ford probably did a statistical analysis of what was coming off the line and decided they could safely advertise 420hp. Maybe some small software changes and perhaps something that reduced internal friction some tiny amount but certainly not 2%. At 2% they would be telling us specifically what they changed.

AzPete 11/15/11 07:55 PM

1 bottle of octane boost......lol

xlover 11/15/11 07:58 PM

my guess is a slightly improved tune. i doubt they would change the rating without changing something on the engine.

Not just in 'the tune'

fdjizm 11/16/11 07:13 AM

I hope they deleted the umbilical cord.

Hytek 11/16/11 08:02 AM

^^lol

The extra 8 hp is to offset the extra paint weight on the rockers/bumper and heavier looking shelby front end so that it can keep up with the 11/12's :stirpot:

TheReaper 11/16/11 01:06 PM

I think I'll trade my 2011 in for the 8 extra hp.
