Watch out V6 Mustang...

2011 cumaro will have 312 HP!

All they need to do is lighten it up by 2-300 pounds or add another 25-30 HP and it might accelerate as fast as a V6 Mustang.

Still only 29 MPG.

My sister thinks she wants one so I went on their build site to spec one.

Really sucks, every time you spec and option they make you take one or two other options to go along with it. Plus on the V6 when you spec the auto tranny you lose the limited slip diff.

Stupid chebby crapola.

Ford is not different. Can't have HID without security package. Want fog lights, need either Pony or MCA package. Nav? No on a non-premium. Etc...

Welcome change to the camaro, which is a great looking car. Also the V8 is one hell of a motor. That said, they will have to dramatically improve handling and lighten it significantly. Will it equal the v6 stang, somehow I doubt it, but if it does the consumer wins, because I've driven the sixer stang and it's one hell of a nice car!

What's really funny is that they have the guts to advertise the cumaro on this forum...

Too bad I hate the Camaro's rear end almost as much as the 05-09 Stang.

GM participates in the witnessed SAE J1349 program which only allows ratings of +/- 1% of actual results. 304 bhp to 312 bhp is to wide a spread so they had to have retested. Its possible the 2010 engines used in the test made an average of 307 bhp and were derated to 304 bhp and the 2011 engines made an average of 309 bhp and was uprated to 312 bhp.

As a matter of policy Ford derates most engines 1%. Actual 2011 5.0 J1349 results were 404/381 on 91 RON (Roughly 87 AKI) and 416/394 on 98 RON (Roughly 93 AKI). Car was not certified on 91 AKI but Fords position is that it reaches full timing advance and bhp on that octane. I suspect the 3.7L actually made 308 bhp on 91 RON but have not bought the SAE Tests results for that engine,.

I hear what you are saying but its been discussed thoroughly on ls1tech c5 and other forums. The engines in both model year Camaro's are identical. They put out the same power. This is just a marketing change. I haven't looked at the press release in months but it even stated in the press release I believe that HP estimates for the 10 v6 were off and that the new rating is the correct one.

According to Autoblog:
UPDATE: Official press release from Chevrolet added after the jump that confirms everything above. One note: There were no actual changes made to the Camaro's V6 engine that resulted in a power increase. Rather, Chevy says the current 304-hp rating was conservative and a new SAE certification resulted in 312 hp. So that means anyone who bought a 2010 Camaro V6 shouldn't feel shortchanged, as their engine is just as powerful as the 2011 model that will start production on June 7th.
So the Mustang with the 305hp V6 actually whooped a 312hp V6 Camaro...
