Video: Me chasing 2013 Boss around Palmer road course

Ran Palmer a couple weeks ago and got some great laps in with a friend who drives a Boss. He's a fantastic driver. We are both on Conti scrubs.

Enjoy!

4th gear up to 105? Top speed 136 mph? Wow! I've never driven that fast. Does the course set up that camera and capture all those stats? Really fun to watch.

Great driving! I like his line, late apex all day long! Good to see some grass now too

It's good to see your GT TP with springs, dampers and sways be able to keep up with a Boss. He seems to gain a bit on corner exits and straights, but you reel hm back. Well done sir.

I have 2 track days coming up in the ext 3 weeks. So pumped!

I do the video and data with my iphone actually. The course layout is pre-programmed in the phone, and it connects to the car via OBDII for wheel speed, gear, throttle, RPM, etc etc.

Tracking the car is super fun. Only way to legally go fast and REALLY learn the car. Not sure if you caught the nice drift Matt had coming out of turn 5 into turn 6 (the uphill esses), but I was sliding at the exact same time. Conti slicks aren't the best tires, but they sure keep things interesting

The boss driver and I were in the instructor group and were having slightly too much fun during that session. He pointed me by per our pre-arrangement in the paddock where we'd each lead a few laps and watch the slight differences in lines. Very fun!

Matt (boss driver) has like 20 years racing experience and could whoop me if he wanted to. His car is bone stock except for the BBS wheels with Conti slicks he was running that day.

I'm happy to keep up with my car! You can see he has a significant advantage of not needing to grab 4th gear in some places that I do need it (like over that uphill mid-course). The extra 700 RPM the Boss revs helps quite a bit. I had to work the gears a bit more to keep pace.

Where are your upcoming track days? My season is "slowing down" as I have i think 3 more events (2 days each), plus an outing at High Plains Raceway for a Porsche event

That's the one thing I'm really jealous of on the Boss cars. 7500 RPM redline of the Road Runner engine. 3rd and 4th are too short with 3.73 for track use with a 6800 RPM redline in the Coyote, I totally agree with you.

I have my first outing to Waterford Hills Raceway next weekend. Short, curvy, narrow and technical track right outside of Detroit. It will be my first time there.

Then 2 weeks after I'll be back at Grattan Raceway, where Ford has been doing demos of the GT350R lately. That track is serious fun, and fast. Looking forward to it.

PCA even, huh? It will be fun beating Porsches which cost 2x as much as your car!

Sounds like a blast! I love the technical courses.

Porsche event is the porsche world tour... I'm driving cayman s, cayman gts, Carerra S, and Carerra GTS around high plains raceway. What could possibly go wrong. 😇

I did have a couple great laps at NHMS this past Monday chasing then passing a new GT3. He was not pleased (instructor run group) and he pitted and did not come back out immediately after I went by. Pouting.

Probably not going to post the gt3 video online cause of the commentary of me and my friend who was riding along, btw... We'll see. Nothing bad I just don't like being potentially seen as bashing anyone who I'll see out there again. Track rats are a small group....

Is that Palmer track open to the public spectator/driving?

Yes. Any club event is open for spectators. Not sure for race days

To drive it, need to attend a club day. There are many options. I instruct with Audi club, BMW club, scda, and northeast track days. Those are my personal favorite clubs but there are others as well

No need to be jealous. Ever consider going to a Boss Manifold and tune if tracking car regularly? Can bring limiter to 7600-7800rpm as well as have more power above 4500rpm where you will always be on the track. With that Mani it will keep pulling to 7800.

I would love to but I like my warranty. I have 3 more years of powertrain so no engine modifications at all for me. Car has plenty of power and I'm happy shifting. If anything I'll do 3.55's

I hear you on the warranty. I take it for granted. My 14 GT TP car came from a steeda dealer brand new with the Boss Mani, Steeda CAI, Boss Side Pipes and SCT tuner with Steeda tune. Only issue I have is no other dealer will work on drivetrain if I have a problem. That being said I don't think there have been any cases where the boss Mani and 7600rpm redline caused an issue. I would not spin it to 8400rpm which the boss motor has been shown to be stable at but the coyote can handle 7600rpm no problem.

Only failed engine I know of is my friend who was running a full aero package and we believe he lost oil pressure which resulted in badness.

Before I consider a tune, I'm doing an accusump and a baffled oil pan.

More power and higher revs would be nice, but not really necessary at present. I'm out-driving my suspension at present and need to improve that before considering touching the engine.

I know the Boss mani is a popular upgrade, but I'm skeptical of doing just the mani, intake and tune. Boss cars come with a few important supporting "performance" mods to take advantage of the higher revs: ported heads and more valve lift via intake/exhaust cams.

They also come with some "reliability" mods: forged pistons, 8000rpm valve springs and sodium filled exhaust valves to handle the heat.

I personally wouldn't throw just the mani on my car and expect it to be as reliable as a Boss to 7500 sustained rpm. 30 minute sessions of 5000-7500 rpm can be quite brutal. My car can do 5000 to 6800 RPM all day long. I may be tempted to just do a intake/tune which extends that to 7000 or 7100, but without other mods I will not push it past that.

^ THIS. The weak link in high revving Coyotes is the oil pump gears. If I was to push my engine past 7300 I'd change to billet oil pump gear at the very least.
