Turbo Diesel Mustang?

A piece in Autoblog toys with the idea. Before you laugh it off, consider if Ford's 3.0 Eurodiesel were used:
  • 3.0 liters
  • 270 hp
  • 443 lb/ft torque
  • 34.6 mpg combined in a big, fat Jag XF
Nearly as much power as the new 3.7, more torque than the new 5.0 and considerably better mileage than any Stang I can recall...

Maybe not so crazy after all.

Look how well the BMW 335d goes.

The BMW 335d is a marvelous car! I wish I could put its engine in my Mustang GT!

And being a diesel, that's probably at about 17 rpm or something.

I would love to have that engine in a stang, it would easily beat the 3.7L in the 1/4 due to the huge torque advantage. Diesel not longer has the ruff sound it used to have.

Check the redline of the engine. Diesels make big torque but have no RPM. If you like shifting at 4500 a diesel is for you.

He's my newest toy. Believe me when I tell you that modern diesels are an absolute blast to drive. Granted, the only transmission offered was a 6-speed automatic, but this thing shoots up its rev range so quickly, I'd only slow the car down if I had to shift for myself. It'll definitely throw you back in your seat from a stop. I believe an engine like this would be awesome in a Mustang!

Look at this moron's comment from autoblog

what they can do with this hill billy vehicle is... you guessed it. make it an aerodynamic fiber glass monocoque construction with very potent battery electric drive and a tiny 2 cylinder cruise range extender.

0-100km/h in 3 seconds is easily possible with little cost.

I think it would be slick to have that diesel in a Mustang but it's not going to happen. Not unless the CAFE standard goes up above 40 MPG and that won't happen for a long time.

My Dad wants a 335D, he is a diesel lover, has his big F350 PowerStroke.

I don't know. Using diesel and Mustang in the same sentence might make a lot of people's heads explode.

Converting gas to diesel? He does realize that diesel, in terms of refinement, is several "rungs" below gasoline, right?

Due to the huge torque they would have much taller transmission ratios so, 4500rpm wouldn't be up and gone as fast it is in a normal gasoline engine.

I have been wanting small diesel engine powered cars for the U.S. for 5 years now. A diesel Mustang would be amazing no question.

I'd always have a good old-fashioned gasline burning V8 Mustang (or two) for fun on the weekends, but a diesel Mustang that would approach 40 mpg on the highway would be great for a daily driver and trip car. The engine note would take some getting used to though.

The new car diesels are very quiet.

Oh I know that, perhaps I should have worded it differently. The lack of a V8 engine note would take some getting used to. All four of my Mustangs have had V8's.

Don't forget the diesel blocks are big, bulky and heavy. The current 4.6 weights 420lbs fully dressed and a diesel 3.0 would be about 550-600lbseasily

That isn't neccesarily so, but rather reflects:
  • A lot of older diesels that were rather overbuilt with lots of heavy iron components. I recall my dad's old Mercedes 300TD where the 3 liter, 5 banger's engine block looked like something out of a tramp steamer. Undoubtedly weighed a ton but they lasted forever -- takes a few hundred thousand miles just to break these things in on your way to a service life well over 500,000.
  • A lot of diesel engines, at least on this side of the pond, are found in heavy duty commercial vehicles and trucks. Hence, big heavy duty motors that would be that way whether diesel or gasoline fueled.
The various modern automotive diesels, made primarily of aluminum like any modern gas motor, tend to be pretty much the same weight as a gas motor of similar size and power. Again, I might point to the 335d as a good example of a powerful, quiet, efficient and lightweight modern diesel with performance nearly on par with its twin-turbo gas-fired stable mate, but with econocar fuel mileage.

I am sure some of you have seen this mustang, but it still amazes me 9s and 35mpg with a Duramax. I have been itching to do this same engine swap in a C5 Corvette.

i am currently driving to work in a 2009 VW jetta TDI 6MT
redline is 4500 but like stated already trans ratios are taller, i shift no later than ~2400 rpm in 1st-3rd gears and can lug it around at 1200rpm in any upper gear
i don't drive like prious drivers
i would have liked 6th a few hundred rpm taller, 2100rpm=70mph
once cruising over 2000rpm, mileage goes down
last tank was ~44.6 mpg, some other drivers claim close to 50mpg but again, i don't drive like prious drivers
i top off tank the same way every time and reset the tripmeter then calculate miles/gals
the dash mileage computer is accurate also, currently showing i may go 665 miles
i've never been able to get more than 14.8 gals in, bubbled to the filler neck top

as far as weight, my TDI is listed as 3285lbs
the gas 2.5s is listed as 3228lbs

you can tell it makes a different sound but no clatter like what you think, most noise is at idle
the more it winds up the quieter it gets, no turbo whistle at all

lots of torque, 236 lb-ft=no downshifting
went fender to fender from 6th gear with a 85-86ish 305 iroc camaro from a 60mph roll until he backed off at 120

diesel in a mustang? it could work but make it an option
