Track Setup: How to best use the tires I have?
Hi guys,
So here is my dilemma: I will be driving my Boss on the track for the first time and opted for 18X9 inches wheels all around. I have a set of Pilot sport Cups which I bought for my past car and have barely used! I would like to use but don’t know how!
This is what I have:
(2) Michelin PS2 235-40R18 (80% tread left)
(2) Michelin PS2 265-40R18 (1,000 street miles on them)
My options are:
1.Mount these on the wheels and drive with a staggered set up, which grossly misses the specs of the car
2. Get rid of the 235’s and get a pair of 265’s, but I will not by PS2s again because they are too expensive.
I understand either way I go, it will be a compromise, but I am trying to identify the safer alternative, if there is one.
Please, guys shed some light
Thank you
All the best
Gus

Just to clarify, are you talking about drag racing or road course track day? Makes a difference... ![Wink](https://themustangsource.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Just my opinion, but I would want to keep the same kind of tire on both ends, regardless of what width you use, for road courses. For drag racing, wide sticky tires on the back, with skinnies up front are what many people use.

Pilot super sport tires are supposed to be better, more grip, and chapter than the aforementioned PS2 s
Id sell what you have and get the PSS if you can in a square setup

Have you tracked the car (or a car) previously? Skinnier fronts will just mean you'll have more tendency towards understeer which is not a bad thing if you're fairly new to road courses. I will probably end up using about a 285-295 rear tire with 275 front for my track setup but I wouldn't hesitate to run the tires you have for at least a track day to see how they work. Not ideal but not terrible or un-drivable either.

If it's your first time doing a track event in any car I say, just run those tires. You probably wont notice too much loss of grip in cornering since it's not likely you will be pushing the car. Yes, under steer but It's braking that will probably suffer the most with the narrower tires.
Or like dmichaels said go buy some cheap track day tires...Nitto seems to be a popular choice...but it wouldn't be mine. If you can change tires at the track these...

If you need to street drive the tire too...

you can run square in either tire and rotate the tires for extended life. The 275 on the Hankook is a little narrower than stock rear. But those tires are so much stickier you wont notice.

I actually just ran limerock for 2 days (in an Audi coupe GT) on Hancock DOT slicks. They were phenomenal. Not recommended if your new to track days tho as they don't give as much warning at the limit compared with street tires
Also I agree on the direzza's. the previous generation was fantastic. And I have to believe the new gen is just as good or better

The 24 hours of lemons. The coupe saw Sonoma raceway, Reno fernley, button willow, Inde Motorsports ranch, firebird raceway and chuckwalla valley raceway and others. It had a turbo 90tq 5 cyl, it sits awaiting a heart transplant. I'm not sure ill ever drive it again, was a fun little racer. We even had it spitting fire on downshifts out the side exhaust.

Thank you so much for all the advice.
I am set on running the tires I have in the first few events and then will go with a square setup and most likely get those Ventus Z214! They are priced right and look a bit stickier than the Nitto NT01s I was looking at!
Thank you all
Best
