I might go mobile1 route, fear of the tick got the best of me and now mine is past due ugh. Is there a 5w50 in mobil1 brand? or just 5w20? If the viscosity is same, isn't this too thin also?

Just got mine done with motorcraft 5w20. I spoke to the tech and he checked the book to see if i could use anything thicker. He says the 5w50 is for the shelbys mostly, and the books says to use 5w20 because there are some bearings near the top of the engine which the thicker oil does not penetrate properly and leaves the smaller crevices unlubricated.

I just spoke with ford parts about the mobil 1, they do carry it so we dont need to spend extra to buy it from elsewhere. Our 5.0L uses 5W20 as per the manual says. And mobil 1 does make sense to me too coz on the jug it has the "FOR GASOLINE ENGINES" logo ford recommends, so it keeps it under warranty. Since dealership carries it anyway no need to worry about that. Using mobil 1 5W20 is only $5 more per litre over motorcraft which I think is ****ty quality to begin with. Mine is due next week I'll keep u guys posted :P

5W50 is for shelby.. i tried that on motorcraft tick didnt go away..

I always thought 5W50 (shelby oil) was thinner due to turbo charged premium fuel engine, I guess its thicker..never thought

I have a Track Pack which requires 5w50. I have the tick... Oil weight will not help...

It depends on when you change your oil for the first time, how often you wait in between oil changes, the octane you are running, the oil viscosity and weight along with brand and also the filter. I always have the techs pour some oil inside the brand new filter before they install it. I also never have them top off the oil. At the end of the day it depends on the engine assembly and factory lubrication. Some are destined for the tick.

I hope you mean supercharged but yes, engines featuring forced induction usually use thicker oil. Using too thick of an oil is not good as it does not circulate properly and may overload the oil pump.

Yeah I thought it was the opposite all this time that supercharged engines using high octane needed thinnest oil to circulate properly :P

For those of you that got the tick, how soon after the oil change did you get it? Right away?

To me the better questions here is how many miles were on the car before your first oil change?

I did my first oil change at 4000 miles. My buddy is a SA at a Ford dealer. Had them do it, since I trust him like a brother. They filled it with the full synthetic 5W-50 Motorcraft, new filter too. Not that this should make a difference, but I've had a Bob's oil separator on since 1k miles too. No tick after the first oil change. I change my cars in January and July, so we'll see after the second oil change...

5w50 ( Track Pack Car) changed oil. Did not have it at 4k miles in April.

5w50 changed oil. 8500 miles. July 1st. Had tick immediately.

I started the car for 30 seconds and went back in because I thought they might have forgot to put the oil in. It was so loud. Went away after a few days of driving. Keep in mind I just had my engine replaced. Waiting to see if it ticks when I get it back Tuesday.

Had the tick on 2nd oil change. Noticed it immediately when I got home, drove right back to dealership but they couldn't figure out how or what. Then one day, it just went away.

I had them put Full Synthetic 5w20 Motorcraft (instead of Synthetic Blend) on both occasions - mine's not trackpack - what will happen if put 5w50?

Need to get Mobil1's soon, is sooo past due heh.

oh man....I just got this noise over the weekend after changing the oil the previous weekend. 5W-20 Mobil 1, first changed at 2800mi, then changed again at 6k mi. Oil level is good. It happens at low RPM under load. Sounded like an exhaust manifold leak to me because it goes away when the RPM's increase. Man, I guess I now have the infamous ticking noise. So for me it was the 2nd oil change.

Well they say to change it before storing in for the winter (which was the reason for my latest oil change)

The first one I changed a bit early just because of all the debris you can potentially get in the oil after breaking it in. Better safe than sorry
Oil isn't that expensive.

Whaaat? You did Mobil1 5w20 and still got the tick?! Should I go 5w50 Mobil1 then? or the brand don't really matter argh. Maybe I should just 'not change' the oil at all. I mean, what's worse then getting the tick ugh?
