Sometimes, I start in 2nd, but it is quite lethargic unless I slip the clutch a lot---which is not cool.

Granted, I'm sure 1-3-5 can't hold up to using all gears for a drag race, but it is great for daily driving.

Six gears are nice to have---but this car would actually be quite drivable with an old 4-speed geared as our 1-3-5 + overdrive.
What are you talking about? 2nd lethargic? I dont have to slip the clutch any more than in 1st when starting in second. Starting in second will spin the tires even with traction control on. It IS the best all around gear in the car. If you are skipping it you might as well of got a 2010 as you are issing out on the meat of the power during legal speeds.

I had a 2008 Gt and it was the same way....the higher the rpm the smoother the shift.

Yep exactly, and my 2 previous pushrod 5.0's were doing the exact same thing with the T-5 tranny.

i have the skip disabled as well and my 2 gear transition sucks as well. it feels like the gate is blocked off for a split second then it goes in with a little help. mine differs from yours though because mine seems harder to shift into second the higher the revs. i also have no other issues in any other gear.

Crap, so you're still having this issue even with "skip shift" eliminated via aftermarket tune? That's pretty much my one, major complaint with my car -- the 1-2 shift often sucks!

Hopefully we can get an answer to this soon. Has anyone figured out what causes the skip-shift? Is it a solenoid that blocks the 2nd gear gate? Maybe a mechanical solution is necessary instead of an electrical one... I have yet to hear of any such thing, though.

I'm sure it's solenoid activated, just no one has figured out the by-pass yet. On GM cars you just unplug the solenoid harness and stick a resistor across the car side harness to keep the dash light off and prevent a fault...

I bet if you physically removed the solenoid and just taped it to the side of the transmission (with gorilla tape, of course), that'd work.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I was thinking somehow whatever they are doing to eliminate the skip shift isnt entireloy eliminating every process. Mine literally feels like there is no second, then with a little wiggle it drops in. Now that I think about it, it does almost exactly what it does with skip shift but only some of the time....hmmm

I had my tune removed for a day because I took it into the dealer for service, and let me tell you it is night and day for the 1 -> 2 shift comparing with a tune and without. The shift is much smoother with skip-shift removed, for sure. Now, it is by no means as smooth as other shifts, but I think those with it removed forget just how bad it was without a tune. This is my opinion, obviously, but I did notice it being more smooth when I reloaded the tune.

Now who is going to volunteer for a tranny pull so we can solve this riddle? I am waiting...

This car has the worst 1 > 2nd shift of any manual I have ever owned. It's a brand new car and it feels like the synchros are shot (when I know they're not).

I would prefer not to have to rev the **** out of my cold engine to get it into 2nd. In the meantime, I'm sticking with the first > third gear method until I get the skipshift feature eliminated with a tune or other method.

My Z06 also had 1>4 skipshift and even when it was enabled, the 1>2 shifts were just smooth as heck. There is definitely something wrong with the way Ford (or Borg or Tremec or whoever made the **** tranny) has implemented the feature with the car.

It certainly is a big killjoy and makes me feel like my car is a brittle piece of machinery. And it is definitely getting worse with colder weather coming....

I couldn't believe how harsh the 1 -> 2 shift is. Definitely another reason for me to get a tune in the spring, since the feedback from those with tunes is that the shift is better.

I've noticed this more and more as well. I wonder if Ford is going to work on recalibrating the solenoid or changing it to offer a smoother 1-2 shift in 2012 cars. This is quickly becoming one of my biggest complaints about the car.

Does this issue apply to the V6? I always thought the 1 -> 2 was really crappy, but I'm new to stick so I wasn't sure if it was just me not being good

The V6 doesn't have the skip shift "feature".

1 -> 2 is typically (in my experience, across a wide variety of makes/models) the least smooth of all shifts. I don't expect this shift in the Mustang to be smooth like butter but I do expect it to not fight me, tooth and nail, when I try to do it.

More than a few times I've tired to grab second and I just give up and go to third instead because I don't want to put any additional force on it. Meanwhile, the mom in the automatic V6 Minivan swerves around me as if I am holding her up on the way to the nail salon.

This is a great point!!!!! Calling all 2011 V6 owners with a stick shift. How is your 1 -> 2 shift? Are you getting the same "resistance" us V8ers with skip-shift tuned out are getting? This could tell us if it is the tranny or something else...

I have never had a problem with the 1-2 shift in my V6. It has a bit of a notchy feel just like all the other gears but I've grown to appreciate that feeling of solid engagement that wasn't always there in my prior cars (including a BMW 330Ci 5-speed).
