Tamperproof Gas Cap Locked Me Out

I just tried filling up and I could not get the gas pump npzzle in the hole, the metal cover would not open. I drove down the street to the next gas station and opened it with my finger. Then it worked, tried insertig the pump in it like 20 times and no problem. Any ideas?

Perhaps some splashed back gas was on the door and gummed it up, making it stick. Just a guess.

Occasionally when I fill up mine lets out a significant "hiss" when the metal cover opens, especially if I have run it down pretty close to empty.

My only guess is that there was some initial backpressure present, and once you relieved it all was back to normal.

This happened to me before, the nozzle head was fitted for diesel gas and won't fit.

I had the very same problem and for the life of me could not figure it out....turns out there and two small "buttons" for a lack of a better term that protrude into the filler neck area...if I remember right they are at 3 and 9 o'clock. When you push the nozzle in, it's pushes these buttons and release the cap mechanism. I found that some older gas stations have nozzles that are slightly smaller and they won't push these buttons and no way you will get that cap pushed in.

In that situation, couldn't you use the funnel that comes with the car to open the filler?

You could but as soon as you pull the funnel out it closes

Its a pain in the a@@ trying to put a funnel through that mechanical cap, specially when the funnel is smaller in diameter then the hole in the gas cap, you got to try to press against one of those buttons on the sides.
By the way I think its a good idea to have a metal funnel for these cars, few times that I used few plastic funnels, the strong force of the mechanical doors that hold down the funnel, it makes me think if you pull it in a wrong way or to fast, it will shave off plastic right off the funnel nozzle, and that it might end up in the gas tank.

Could you fuel the car through the funnel? I've never tried so I don't know.

You can't use just any funnel. Ford supplies a special one with the car.

I don't know that a fuel pump is going to work through the funnel. It's pressurized, and it has shut-off sensors that may not work properly if they're outside the tank receiver. Pretty sure those funnels are meant for filling from a can, not from a pump.

You are correct, the Ford funnel is designed for using a can. I didn't know if it would work with a pump.

Yes that is where it's located. I had to use mine for the first time last winter, when I couldn't figure out how to open that spring loaded metal seal. I used the funnel and it allowed me to pour my Stabil in there.

The narrow end of the funnel goes into the hole, not the other way around.
