take off in 3rd??

Is it normal for a 2011 gt, auto trans, to take off in 3rd gear if the trans selector is set for 3rd? I know most fords do take off in 2nd if selector is in 2nd. Thanks

Auto? Probably can because of the torque converter.

I can take off in 3rd in my manual but there's a lot of clutch feathering going on.

Why would any trans, particular an auto take off in 3rd? That's what first gear is for, isn't it? I have 3.73s MT and I always use first to take off. You don't even need gas, just back off the clutch nice and smooth. IMO this causes less stress on the clutch.

I said I can....I didn't say I made a habit of it. I did it a couple of times just to see if I could. I mostly start out in 2nd because 1st doesn't last very long with the 3.73's.

Steve, I wasn't targeting that at you, just wondering out loud. I can see the case for needing 2nd when it's slippery out, but in general I think 3rd is crazy, especially for a Auto.
But since you mentioned 2nd, are you worried about clutch wear at all?

Not at all since I use the clutch one to get up to a 3rd gear speed instead of shifting more. Plus even if I do wear it out that all the more reason to upgrade. I have had to start out in 3rd a couple of time in the snow with the TC off.
