Static electricity causing dust to cling?

Hi All,

Anyone else having major dust build up on the rear of the car, especially on the black plastic insert between the tail lights? I drove 3 miles on paved roads and I could write my name in the dust with my finger. Trying a quick wipe down and the dust moves but sticks like a negative charge is holding it there.

Has anyone ever mounted a grounding strap to a mustang, maybe the center of the body where is won't be so noticable? (do those things work??)

Can't comment on the grounding strap as I haven't tried it. But the insane dust on the back of the car was one of the first things I noticed when I bought my 2014. I used to have a F-150 before this, so I never really noticed this issue before.

I think it has something to do with the negative air pressure behind the car as its moving. The air must be swirling around back there causing road dust to accumulate quickly. I can take my clean car for a one minute slow drive around the neighborhood at 25 mph and the back will be covered in dust, it's crazy

I also got tired of the factory black decklid panel being a dust magnet and my answer to the problem was paint matching to the body color. Probably not the most elegant solution compared to the aftermarket panels available, but it worked in hiding the dust much better.

I call that black piece on the deck the "OCD Panel." Hey Ford, I specifically did NOT order a black car because any visible speck of dust brings out my obsessive compulsiveness!

However, just to be sure I truly appreciate all the effort required to keep a black car clean, you strategically placed a black panel on my car. Thanks so much!

I remember i had a black mustang (2002 MY) and that was a dust magnet more than a chick magnet. What i used to do was carry a swiffer duster and use that when i got to shows or when i got home. Actually worked pretty well. The three coats of wax on top of two coats of sealant over a nice polish probably helped too but lol

Funny because I don't have a static problem with my Mustang but I seem to get a lot of static from my wife.

I will never have a black exterior car again. Ever. Never ever ever. My dad's '66 Tbird and then my '86 SVO cured me of wanting a black car. I just can't even. It takes a special breed to put up with an ebon car.

...well, maybe, *maybe* I'd be ok with a satin black one... although while it might(?) not show the dust as much, the upkeep on the satiny/not scratched bit would be fun...

Which brings me to the painted decklid panel.. that's pretty sweet, John. Like the look!

I wonder if the panel were painted with a satin clear, or satin black (such as SEM Hot Rod Black (Not especially a plug, just like the stuff myself)) would the dust be as noticeable as the glossy panel is? I can say that paint does do a good job of holding up (it's been on the car for, uh... 5 years now? Nice... looks as good as it did 'new'), even on the sills and lower bumper edge of my car, and doesn't seem to show the dust, especially on the rear valence area. Which is why I wonder how it'd do on the panel.

Anyway, just waxin' a lil' on the possibles... and chiming in on saying 'no' glossy black exterior paint.

I don't have the option of painting the lower trunk panel body color. It already is.

I run hot and cold about choosing black. I bought mine in late May and couldn't order what I would have really liked. And any alternate colors located east of the Mississippi either were loaded up with electronics and camera, or if they didn't have those options, they had automatics. Since I wanted an S197 GT Premium 'Vert with a stick immediately, I took mine off the dealer's floor.

If I wasn't retired, I don't think I'd have gotten black. It does look outstanding, turns heads and gets tons of admiring compliments. But no matter how careful and **** I am about it's appearance, it has it's share of surface scratches and swirls that make me crazy when it's in direct sunlight. At shows and cruises I pray for slightly overcast days or park near shade.

But dust happens and it doesn't bother me anymore. It gets wiped down with a microfiber cloth or California Duster everytime I take it out. It stays dust free for about 3 minutes.

Que sera, sera.

"scratches and swirls"
Sounds like the product of wiping with a microfiber cloth and using a california duster :-/

The only way to keep black pristine is to wash before wiping.

I use the California Duster and have no scratches. There used to be a detail spray that had anti static properties, but I don't think they make it any more.

Yup, that back black piece (and the lights) will look "dusty" after the shortest drive. It's not "static" per se, it's the nature of that type of plastic wherever it's used. And it's true the airflow over the car etc. makes it worse.

It is also impossible to clean by any contact means without making micro-scratches. Actually, just about anything touching them causes scratches. [Look at the pieces under a proper inspection lamp if you think yours aren't scratched up, that is if they're not so scratched up you can't even find an unscratched part to compare with.]

They still look nice under regular light, even when dirty. '15 is a step back re the back lights/fascia IMO, it was possibly the best-looking part of the car (compared to pre-13 and post-14 so far).

Is that your white car in your avatar? If so, you'll never notice the kind of scratches that a California Duster creates on a black car. Hell, how do you even notice dust? O_O

The black decklid on the 2013's and 14's has much thicker clear coat and it will also hide scratches better.

I meant on the black deck lid. I had a black C6 before my 5.0 and it was frigging nightmare. I only notice dust on my stripes.

Now if we could just solve the problem with the taillights scratching I'd you look at them funny.

I'm on my 3rd Black Mustang and would have no other color. The stuff sticking to the rear is not an issue.

I haven't noticed this on my Oxford White Mustang.

I notice the sides get dirty quicker then the back-end.
