Spare Tire Question
I didn't even look in my trunk to see how the spare tire looked. As soon as I picked up the car, I was out driving it. I guess I should probably take a look at that at some point.
The tire diameter needs to be the same or you'll mess up your Trac-Lok diff if you're flat is on the rear.
Ford's "solution" has been lousy for flat tires. They should have made a proper size mini available for each tire/wheel combo (at least as an option). And if you use the inflator kit you wreck the TPMS$$$. And with the back roads I love to drive, the Roadside Assistance needs a cell signal - which isn't always available. "Can you hear me now? Hello...?"
I don't think tire diameter is the issue. The 235/50/R18 and 255/40/R19 tires have diameters of 27.3" and 27", respectively. Not having the spare on the Brembo cars makes a little sense, since it needs to clear the brakes. The only reasons I can think of for the others are cost savings and weight.
It is near impossible to find a mini within the recommended .25" margin for the 27.2" 235/50x18 on the Bullitts. There have been numerous threads on sites about this challenge that Ford ignored.
The 05-08 GT's had 17" and that mini wouldn't fit the 18's correctly. And I've read where the diameter on those still didn't match the GT close enough to use on the rear - so you had to change 2 tires if you're flat was on the rear. T185-60-R-17 – around 25.5 tall.
I finally found a Marauder mini on ebay that's just barely within Tire Rack's suggested range, but beyond the recommended .25". They are few and far between.
Temporary tire size used on the Marauder is T155/80D18
Diameter is 27.76. This is a 1.84% difference with our Bullitt Mustang stock tires, and within 'recommended' difference.
If the flat is on the rear and your spare isn't a perfect match you must be sure to turn the Traction Control off or the ABS will engage.
And two different diameters on the rear definitely puts excess heat and wear on the discs in the Trac-Lok rear end.

I just checked fordparts.com. They have part numbers for steel and aluminum mini spares.
Steel 17x5 (for 17" and 18" wheels)
Part#: 1007B
Aluminum With 19" Wheels ; With 18" Aluminum Mini Spare Wheel; Wheel Assy - Spare
Part#: 1007E

I want to def get a spare tire for my v6.
My MB and my Porsche both have aluminum spare wheels with permanently-mounted deflated spare tires that collapse inwards, folding the sidewall, when stored.
The pump inflates the tire for usage.
The valve stem is removed to deflate for storage.
A temporary tire is WAY better than fix-a-flat.
One time I skewered my brand new $900 factory rim and the only way fix-a-flat would have worked was to jam the can into the opening.
A spare is the way-to-go to go. (Packled looks for things to make them go).

That would be my question too. What size tire needs to go on the 17x5 rim to match it as closely as possible to the 235/50x18 stock tires...or is it even possible to get a match that's within the recommended range?
On a personal note, IMHO this is a real screw-up by Ford, substituting a useful spare tire with the "Tire Mobility Kit". Like cdynaco mentioned, getting Roadside Assistance requires a cell phone signal...you take the "scenic route" through the mountains, you better have a working spare on hand!

Just get a stock spare and use it on the rear of the car only. If you blow out a front brembo tire, move the good rear to the front and use the spare on the back tire. The rear brakes are the same on all the cars, so any spare will fit.
It's no harder than that. I don't know why everyone is making it such a bigger deal than that.
