S-197 Ford Mustang Air Bag Light On!

My Air bag light went on a few weeks back and now stays on. Anyone have this problem? Car has over 4k now. Can it be fixed by ourselves or does it need dealer attention?

I don't have the problem but it's most likely a dealer issue, take it in

Dealer attention. You shouldn't mess with the airbag system without the proper equipment and power down techniques. Expecially when one is indicating a problem. It's under waranty so just take it in.

Airbag light is quite common on the 2011s, take it in to the dealer and they will fix it.

Do a search. I had this problem and started a thread on this same subject over a year ago (June/July 2010). There were many good suggestions in there re. loose plugs and things to watch the dealer on re reassembly, but otherwise this is definitely an in-warranty, dealer fix.

Hi,

Here's a previous post on my experience with this issue. Hope it helps.

Rick

I had the same problem. The light would come on intermittently, so I took it in to the dealer. Predictably, the light wouldn't go on when they had it and they could find no problem. I told the service manager to note the problem (making sure this remained a warranty claim) and that I would be back when it failed completely. Sure enough, over the next few weeks the light stayed on more and more, until it remained on all the time. I then made another appointment and took it in. I was supposed to pick it up that night, but got a call from the service manager telling me they had pulled a bunch of components from the interior and could they keep the car another day. The next day, I call to see if my car is going to be ready for pick up, and get told that they still couldn't find the problem, and that it was probably a "pinched wire" (which is dealer-speak for "We have no friggin idea what's wrong with your car."). Day 3, I get a call from the service manager telling me they found the problem...one of the airbags in the driver's seat. Unfortunately, because these stupid things are basically explosive devices, the dealerships don't stock them, and they would have to order the part which would be there the next day. I finally got the car back at the end of day 4. I was lucky I was able to use my wife's car because at no time was I ever offered a loaner. I can't imagine how much time the techs had into this little fishing expedition, or how much this little project ended up costing, but it really makes you wonder what will happen to these cars when they are 10 years old and all this gee-whizz, nanny-state "Let's turn cars into safety cocoons." B.S. starts crapping out. Who will pay then? Ford? The dealership? The owner? The cost of repairing this stuff will exceed the value of the car.

Hey RedCandy5.0,

I agree with the other members on taking your vehicle in to your Ford dealer for diagnosis. Then private message me with your contact info, VIN, dealer, and mileage so I can escalate this to your Customer Service Manager in your area. I’d like to see you out enjoying your ride to the fullest. Also, thank you for the info, dnr427! You guys are great!!

ARGGGGGGGGG! I was going to lunch with a friend today in my week old GT500 and my airbag light came on. When we got back in the car and started it up, it was off. A few miles down the road, it came back on again. I checked the connector and it was attached, not pushed in quite all of the way, but attached. On the way home by myself, it didn't come on. I'm thinking it's the passenger airbag module in my Recaro. It's going to the dealer tomorrow. I'm sure they're probably going to tell the connector was loose after waiting for 2 hours and send me on my way and then the next time I have a 200 pound passenger in my car, it will go on again. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO frustrated!

Every new car gets hit with something. If thats all you get, count yourself lucky. My windshield was cracked in half on the 2nd day of owning it.

Thanks for making me feel better. The issue, I'm not too worried about, it's the process of getting it resolved. I've already read a ton of horror stories about this issue and not just the number of times bringing the car in to get it fixed, but the damage that's been done to people's seats.

They say it's the airbag seat module, as expected. Part's on order. At least they are going to contract the install out to a local upholstery shop to work on the Recaro's. Thanks Deysha, I'll let you know.

If these Mustangs are like the 04 to 08 F150's, you can turn the key to "on" (don't start it), and the airbag system runs it's diagnostic (does this everytime you turn the key to on when starting). The airbag light will then flash a 2 digit code (if it detects an error in the system). The light flashes the first digit, then pauses, then flashes the second code. This repeats 3 times. Then google "airbag codes" for Ford, and it will tell you what failed based on the code. As an example, it may flash twice, pause, then flash 3 times, then pause, then repeat this sequence two more times. In this example, the airbag system would be telling you a code 23 is stored. Don't confuse with OBD II codes.

However, if my Mustang is under warranty, then I would not be posting here and asking for help; I'd be at my dealership enjoying a jelly donut and a cup of coffee in the customer lounge!

I tried, doesn't seem to be working.

well searching for air bag codes I came across this thread, my car even though older only has 73K on it and is not driven that much (will mainly be a driveway queen until I build it the way I want, and reading posts scares me about having to take it to the dealer!!!!

Its flashing a code 3 2 I really don't want the dealer to take me for a ride and rape my wallet....

does anyone have any other suggestions to reset the code/clear it, I have the battery disconnected right now as I type this hoping that clears it, it started just after I installed the new LEDs in the turn signal housings and the new led flasher unit...could this have caused code 32???? it hasn't really been driven lately except to the place of purchase to repair two loose wires that were undone...

2013 mustang

Girlfriend has a 2013 mustang GT. I was replacing the map lights with LEDs and saw this 3rd light bulb just hanging out in the map light housing not plugged into anything. So I pulled the bulb out. Well then the airbag light came on. I put the bulb back in and airbag light went off. The housing that holds the map lights are the only roof mounted interior lights. No dome light for the rear seats or anything. What the heck is the deal with the light and the airbag? Like I said you can't see it unless you pop off the housing and there's nothing to insert the bulb into for it to illuminate (seat belt light, door ajar, so on and so on). It just hangs out in the housing loose. Light comes on when you turn the key on for about 15 secs and that's it. I know there's a recall for the airbag and I called the dealer today and ford still doesn't have a fix for it yet. Thanks.
