U.S. car makers post strong November sales

By Shawn Langlois, MarketWatch
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — General Motors Co. on Thursday reported a 6.9% jump in November U.S. sales, led by a spike in demand for bigger trucks as well as continued strength in smaller gas sippers. Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC fared even better.

GM (NYSE:GM) , still the biggest of the three, said it sold 180,402 cars and trucks, paced by a 34% increase in sales of the Chevy Silverado and a 22% rise in sales of the GMC Sierra.
A surge on the more profitable truck side bodes well for GM as does a move away from the lower margin business of selling vehicles to rental car companies and other bulk buyers.
Retail sales rose 15% while fleet sales dropped 14%.
As for compact cars, the Chevrolet Cruze posted a 54% sales increase. Buick sales fell 7.2% for the month compared to November 2010, while Cadillac sales slipped 5.6%.
“We are seeing a broad spectrum of customers return to the market,” said Don Johnson, GM’s head of U.S. sales operations. “Truck sales showed a very solid increase, as we expected, but the momentum building behind our most fuel-efficient vehicles was even stronger.”
GM shares were sucked lower with the broader market in early trading, off less than 1% to $21.13. For the year, the stock is down 43%.

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F) handed in a 13.3% rise to 166,865 cars and trucks. The improvement was helped by a 20% gain in retail sales. Ford said the increase helped bring its retail market share to an average of 15% over the past three months, its highest level in five years.
Ford also raised its first-quarter production forecast by 3% to 675,000 vehicles.
“The industry sales rate has exceeded 13 million in each of the last three months,” said Ken Czubay, head of Ford’s U.S. sales division. “This suggests the current momentum is not an aberration. We believe replacement demand will continue to support stronger levels in 2012, and Ford is ready to meet that demand with high-quality, fuel-efficient cars, utilities and trucks.”

Chrysler Group LLC was the big winner early, posting a 45% surge in sales to 107,172 cars and trucks. That marks the 20th consecutive month of year-over-year improvements and also the best November since 2007.
The rebounding car maker, controlled by Italy’s Fiat (MCI:IT:F) , has now posted six months in a row of vehicle sales gains of at least 20%.

Feel like a traitor, but that front view of the Challenger is pretty appealing.

I do see more Camaro's on the road compared to seeing 2010 and up stangs. I really don't understand why. I had test drove a 2010 Camaro and had issues with seeing out of it. Horrible blind spots and the interior is just down right cheap plastic looking crap. Also being no wear in the league of class as Ford designed for the stang. My only thought for higher sales in Camaro is that many stang owners are holding on too there 2007 and up, waiting to see how the new 15 looks. For those who like the 15 sales will sky rocket. For those who don't like the 15, then sales for the 2014 will rocket. Either way more new stangs will be bought in 2014 and 15 way over the Camaro.

I think only a select few will be waiting for the new ZL1 and not many. Edmunds has the new 2012 ZL1Camaro listed base around 54k or so and thats with no options added. A few upgrades and your up to 60k. One can by a nicely equipped vette for same price. Most GM enthusiasts who are going to spend 60k on a sports car are going for the classic Musscle Corvette. No matter how much hp they give the Camaro the bottom line its still a Camaro and it will never have the roots of the Vette when it comes to GM sports cars. Im certainly not saying the Corvette is the end all be all but let's face it, the vette is GM's iconic sports car and the Camaro is known throughout history as being the poor mans Corvette.

Personally, I can't understand why GM would price another sports car as high as some model Corvettes. I fully understand that this new Camaro will have 580 hp and probably faster than several Vette models but bottom line, its not a Corvette its still a Camaro. One can dress up a terd and make the terd look nice but bottom line, its still a terd and Im not implying the Camaro is a terd. Its the name Corvette just like the Boss, Iconic. My opinion majority of GM sports car enthusiasts that are going to spend 60k or more on sports car, will buy the vette and not a ZL1Camaro. Just my 2 cents. Long live Ford and the stang

Does it specify if the ones sold are v6 or v8. I must see 10 v6 camaros a day. I can't remember the last time I've seen an ss.
