New 5.0 owner

Hey just traded in my BMW for hopefully something more dependable. All i can say is the 5.0 is awesome, doesnt have all the tech as my previous car but its faster, rides better and sounds amazing. 2nd gear is a real killer.

About the car
Deep impact blue
2013 gt premium with recaro leather <-- seats are amazing!!
6 speed m/t
3.73 rear end<-- might swap for 3.55 if it would help fuel consumption, but would have to be at least 3+mpg
18,000 miles on the clock

This forum provided me with plenty of info while i was trolling the last couple weeks on what to buy so thanks for that. Its bad that i had a list of upgrades to buy before i found my car.

I do have one question, i noticed that when push in the clutch when shifting from 1st to 2nd it thunks when i take it out of 1st and into 2nd it thunks. in less words the entire action from 1st to 2nd makes noise. at slow speed if i give it a small amount of throttle and let off it thunks. almost seems like there is slop in the clutch/tranny/driveshaft/rear end. any thoughts?

any help would be great
Thanks,

Not sure about the thunk as mine is an auto, but someone here should have some idea, and congrats on the Mustang!

I think this has been reported and posted by many (the 1st to 2nd thunk). If I'm on the right track, some have fixed by having the manual transmission fluid changed (Ford issued a TSB on this I think); others have replaced the bushing on the shift lever.

Search here for "shifting". I'm sure some posts will pop up.

Try being a little smoother on your clutch application, what you are most likely feeling is the driveline slack being taken up too suddenly.

You need to fully depress the clutch pedal and release smoothly on the shift, hurry too much and you will get some noise.

First off, congrats on the 5.0 purchase. A buddy of mine had a stock 2008 BMW 335i twin turbo v6 and man oh man did he have a MYRAID of issues. Spent thousands. And it was kinda slow compared to the 5.0.

Any ways, my car has the thunk from 1st to 2nd as well. I got used to it. I mark it up as hey you want an amazing 420 hp in a car that has a base price of 30k, this is your only trade off, just deal with it. Your not hurting anything. I can tell you for sure that the shifter bushing does not solve the problem either BUT trust me, buy it anyways from Energy Solutions. Best bang for your buck $30 mod u could do to the car. Makes shifting much tighter and crisper with no skipped shifts. More refined and european feeling and it takes less than 10 minutes to install.

Ive never tried the fluid change but it might be worth a shot if its really bothering you.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the replies, i will see once i get more comfortable with this transmission. would the bushing be better than a whole new shifter or is it just a simple fix till i buy an MGW shifter? I would like just a simple ball is the oem one replaceable? If i could buy a $30 bushing and a new ball that would be better on the wallet. Had the wife out learning how to shift today only killed it once.

I experience the same thing you are describing with mine. Try to reproduce it with the car in neutral. Mine still has the noise present with the engine running. That to me narrows it down to the clutch. I did ask the Dealer to listen to mine while it was in for another repair. The Master Tech did not think it was a issue. But if you are replacing the Shifter or Bushing to eliminate the noise... I think you will be unsuccessful. There are benefits to swapping out the Shifter...

I was listening to it again tonight, I should have clarified a bit. the clutch doesnt make noise when depressed but it happens when i let of the gas or get back on it...sounds like slop somewhere between the engine and rear end. I remembered my dads old truck and it would do the same thing. If you crawled under you could actually twist the driveshaft back and forth i.e. slop. i may need to jack it up and see. that still wont fix the thunk while pulling out of first and sliding into second.

Congratulations!
Yeah, the 5.0 is such a comfortable and fulfilling driver's car!
My brother just got rid of his 135i with the Twin Turbos. He had a new intake on it with the dual cone filters and the JB4 tuner? I think that's what it's called. But man it was fast! His was an auto and with those two parts he could run dead even with me in my old stock 5.0 with a manual. His sounded sweet though! Listening to those turbos spool... man! Intoxicating! But my car was way more fun!

Have fun with it, you really will love it!

Sounds like drive shaft slap....common on most especially until you get used to the shifting. These take an easy hand on the shifter and they will slide into gear.

May I inquire as to what you paid¿

+1 on the 1-2 shift. I found in general that this car needs finesse on a number of things:
1) Smooth reduction of throttle right before you shift (but not a complete lift)
2) Rapid but smooth clutch press
3) Medium speed deliberate shift
4) smooth and controlled clutch release

If I hurry my shifts and don't match the RPM to within +/-200 I get the clunk in 1-2 and 2-3 shifts.

Yeah unfortunately they do have a clunky drivetrain at low speeds, the consensus has been that it's caused by rear axle backlash. Ford specs it a little on the loose side, which can cause the clunking feel when you're on and off the throttle in 1st or 2nd. I think it's one of those things where you just have to sacrifice some refinement to get performance at a lower price point.

2 piece driveshaft, what would you expect with an extra universal joint.

Congrats. Solution to thunk and boring driving is MGW.

Yep. If you can find a place legally to drive over 120 mph, it's the best mod for the $400.00 plus range.
