The previous owner of my 2014 GT did something with the spare tire layout, that for the life of me, cant figure out. The threaded retention rod that goes through the jack/spare tire shoots about 1" above the trunk mat. This cant be correct. Does anyone have a picture of how that assembly is suppose to go. I fee like they lost parts to this assy and were trying to improvise. Thanks.
just a guess, they might have had a full size spare, which would stick out about 1" from the floor mat and would require a longer hold-down screw, so they probably came up with something longer . . . I know because I have this setup myself and the stock one is too short . . . will take a picture later if I get a chance and if I remember
These are from my 2014 convertible. The first is of a piece of clothes hangar that I fashioned to hold up the trunk mat and keep attached to the cable.
The second is of the mat being held up. You can see that the 'square' loop goes through the strap and the other end hooks over the edge of the trunk. Very handy.
The third is of the spare in place.
The last is with the spare removed. You can see the threaded piece that holds the spare in place. Hope these help.
Thanks a million guys. Hey katz, that's what mine looks like. I have an aluminum rim spare though. Does the top of the threads rest upon the trunk mat or is there some kind of threaded support as shown in illustration gravydog posted? Like I said, mine pokes through the trunk mat about an inch. My car is being detailed right now, so when I get it back, I'll disassemble it and see if the retention rod is connected properly.
The cap at the top is lost in many cases. This is the support for that trunk 'floor' cover. Without it, the rod will poke through the cover as you load things in the trunk. The trunk floor will then collapse around that rod. You have to put something between the rod and the cover. And if your cover is too far gone, you might need to replace it outright if it can't be repaired from the damage.
You can fashion something else, either some sort of hard rubber to affix to the bottom of the trunk cover, or go to a Ford dealership and get the cap to go on the end of the rod. I did the second. It works a treat, amazingly so considering the gap between the sides and that rod, but definitely worth not losing again! I managed to save my trunk cover 'floor' before it got too bad, thankfully. Previous owner lost the thing in my case. It ain't gonna get lost again if I have anything to do with it.
I can't seem to find the part number or any other source easily. Quick googling turned up nothing. Kinda lucky I found that picture there, actually.
Awesome. Thanks for taking the time to help with this. That threaded cap is whats missing and the trunk mat is sunken in due to lack of support. That's why the rod is poking through. Seems to be an issue with the 13-14 models. See below. Being that the rigid protective pad on the bottom of the trunk mat is damaged a bit, I'm going to fabricate a nice size plate with a welded nut to fit the threaded retention rod.
I failed to photograph one very important part. My '14 (a very early '14) was made with this 'plastic' square glued to the underside of the trunk floor piece.
yep, the mat (and board) should be flat, not sunk in . . . mine does not have that plastic piece, just the cap on the rod that the floor board sits on, so far it has not poked through
