My disappointment is that I can not seem to add Mp3 files off a CD to the Hard drive.
Also I was disappointed in the asthetic display of the NAV HU, its UI is lacking HUGE compared to the Ford My Touch. And it has been this way since 2010! 4 yrs and no update to the visuals!? Rediculous.

Adding the GPS to the Super Duty is $910, that is the most Expensive Vehicle I have seen to add it to from Ford.
Like I said, Electronics Package, not just a GPS. But for the GPS it can find my house, while Google Maps and my Garmin stop me down the street.
The interesting thing about me thats jsut the opposite from you is my Garmins update quarterely and have had my address listed for the past two years. My Ford does not. It is a defunct outdated system because ford Chose to ignore the customer. as far as HD radio. We listen to XM. SO the GPS was the mani reason i bought it to have it in the Dash at all times. My car was manufactured March 12 who knows jsut how old the maps are. its bee way too long in my opinion . One year maybe two years tops but this is wrong when Ford says thats it. If they chose to abandone all the customers with this system especially under warranty they should re-emburse the customer in some way.

Here's my 2c on this topic. I can speak from experience on this as my wife has an 11 GT with EP, Comfort and Glass roof.

There seems to be a lot of misplaced anger about the substandard Navigation component of the Electronic Package. I chose my words carefully as the OP insists that he/she paid over 2 grand for Nav, but lack of updates and satisfaction from Ford Customer Service are crux of the issue. The price paid for the EP includes a lot of other options, so it's not fair to single out the Navigation as being over priced when it's not a single option, but part of a bigger bundle.

The bundle feature isn't anything new in automotive industry, it's the norm. You think the price paid for the Mustang Electronics package is exorbitant, then you haven't priced out bundles from other manufacturers lately. So it's easy to quote that Nissan may have a cheaper one and also provides updates as you desire, I would bet that the majority of electronic packages from other brands cost just as much or more than Ford's.

While I agree with the notion that the lack of updates kind of sucks, and that Ford Customer Service could try to extend an olive branch of some kind, be it a coupon or voucher for discount on the next update or a free oil change if no update is available, that's where I draw the line.

The bigger part of the blame pie needs to be served to the OP. If the quality, appearance, function, and features of the Navigation was so important to your overall satisfaction of your Mustang, then it was YOUR responsibility to do your due diligence before either checking off that option box at the dealership, or buying it as is off the lot.

You bought a Ford, not an Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac, Acura, Lexus, or pick another expensive brand. The Ford Mustang is a 2 door sports coupe, targeted at a specific demographic, and the quality of the Navigation in my opinion falls in line with what I would expect. You want the driving performance and style of Mustang but with extra bells and whistles you would get in a BMW. I'm not going to put words in the OPs mouth by saying he/she wanted the same exact Navigation as you would get in these other premium brands, just updates. I don't even know how frequently BMW offers updates, but I know sure has hell they will likely charge you a good chunk of change for one.

For giggles I just hit the BMWUSA website and discovered they don't even offer a 3 series coupe any more, it's now the 4 series. Selecting the base 435i Coupe at 46k and adding the Technology Package which is over 3k, gets you right to 50k. A new '14 GT Premium 35k adding the $2340 EP gets you to 37-38k as now there is a 1k incentive.

Is a 50k BMW 435i comparable to a 38k Ford Mustang? Performance wise, sure, but for features and amenities they are worlds apart, as you would expect from the 12k base price differential.

Unfortunately, the OP has got tunnel vision on this one issue (lack of map updates & satisfaction from Ford Customer Service), instead of looking at the big picture. Ford and other brands have the enormously difficult task of trying to appeal to as many buyers as possible for their product. The Mustang is, and I hope, always will be the fast, fun, and AFFORDABLE sports coupe that most of here enjoy. So for another lame analogy you are expecting a Peter Luger steak at the Golden Corral buffet. Ford did the best it could in offering this package that would be durable, integrate with Sync, and offer decent functionality and performance that would satisfy the majority of buyers who select this option.

In this day and age, you can get information on just about any consumer product or service you desire. Google, bing, forums, magazines, TV shows, YouTube, the list goes on and on. Before my wife bought her GT, I knew that the factory navigation systems tended to be pricey, and part of bigger option packages, and that the German & Japanese brands had the better quality units and that the Domestic units in the US lagged behind.

I didn't have the option of ordering the EP for my '13 Boss, so I didn't have to worry about this. As far as the previous comment on replacing the head unit being difficult, this was true until the newly released iDatalink Maestro kit came out. It allows you to replace the dash panel with a factory looking piece that lets you retain Sync, and use the Kenwood head units that have Garmin Navigation. You can upgrade your audio AND add navigation for about the same price as the EP should you desire to go that route <rimshot>.

I deal with customer support issues all day long, and for the most part there are 3 buckets. Product Issue, Configuration Issue, Customer Issue. The toughest problems to tackle are complex environments, with new/buggy products coupled with a customer or business partner that is either untrained, unmotivated (wants you to do all their work for them) or just plain difficult to deal with. Progress is made when everyone involves gets educated, are made aware of the root cause of the problem, what is being done about it, and if or when they can expect relief or move on to another solution.

It seems here the OP is taking out their own failure to do research about the lack of updates from Ford or their supplier on the Mustang brand. As outlined above, I don't believe this is correct or fair. It reminds of this old joke.

A man flying in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. Reducing altitude, he spotted a man on the ground and descended to shouting range.

"Excuse me," he shouted. "Can you help me? I promised my friend I would meet him a half hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The man below responded: "Yes. You are in a hot air balloon, hovering approximately 30 feet above this field. You are between 40 and 42 degrees North Latitude, and between 58 and 60 degrees West Longitude."

"You must be an engineer," responded the balloonist.

"I am," the man replied. "How did you know?"

"Well," said the balloonist, "everything you have told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I am still lost."

Whereupon the man on the ground responded, "You must be a manager."

"That I am" replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?"

"Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are, or where you're going. You have made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. The fact is you are in the exact same position you were before we met, but now it is somehow my fault."

If you want better Navigation in your Mustang, check out the Kenwood double DIN thread in the Audio Section of this forum. I wanted better sound, and getting Nav was a bonus, and I didn't check out the frequency of the map updates from Garmin as it wasn't a deal breaker for me. Ford manufactures vehicles, and adds electronic options to fit the price point for every model.

It is up to the consumer to know what they are buying, and not slam the seller after the fact. Lack of frequent map updates on Mustang Navigation system has been discussed before, here and on other forums. Try hitting a google/bing search and see for yourself.

Caveat Emptor

Ford rep told me in January that this type of music transfer capability stopped in 2012. I asked him the same thing as I was hoping to just store my iphone music library in the cars HD and rock out to the "jukebox."

Let us not forget this announcement Ford made in Jan 2014:

https://media.ford.com/content/fordm...customers.html

"More than 1-million vehicles equipped with SYNC AppLink are on the road today, and another 3.4 million vehicles – model year 2010 and newer – will be eligible to download AppLink later this year."

Since my 2011 does not have AppLink, one could only assume that I am part of the group Ford is referring to. Well, the first half of the year is nearly over, yet no update from Ford. Did they overpromise / under deliver again?

No, it was not available prior to 2012 either. The hard drive equipped head unit can only store audio CDs not data CDs with MP3 or WAV files.

I agree with all of your points. But I heard the balloon joke slightly differently (bear in mind that I work with computers all day)...

I heard that the story took place in Washington State and that the balloonist was carrying passengers in dense fog looking for Sea-Tac airport. They only dropped low enough to shout at someone in a rooftop lounge. When told their coordinates, the balloonist did not respond but merely maneuvered the balloon to a safe landing at the airport. When the passengers asked how he had found the airport with such limited information, he replied "The response I was given was both completely accurate and completely useless so I knew we must be next to the Microsoft building and I could find my way from there."

And, just to clarify, the head won't transfer the files to the hard drive due to copyright issues, correct?

I don't know what excuse Ford uses - the system gives no explanation or error message when you try, it just fails to work. Besides, there is nothing preventing you from burning an audio CD from your MP3 files and then transferring that to the hard disk so it hardly prevents copyright infringement. It just takes longer.

Hi Nocturnal’14,

Although you can save music to your navigation system, it will only allow you to save it from an audio CD. It will not accept files from a data CD, such as an MP3 CD. Make sure you’re following the instructions on page 395 of your owner’s manual in order to record the music to your Jukebox: http://www.fordservicecontent.com/Fo...US_02_2014.pdf

Hey msqr,

A release date hasn’t been announced publically yet for this software update. As more information becomes available, I’ll be sure to share with this forum. Until then, I suggest periodically checking your account at: www.Support.Ford.com for software update information.

Hello Raiderse,

Map updates are handled through our software partner, HERE (formerly Navteq). If you’re not seeing accurate map information in your area, I encourage you to check out this Map Creator tool: http://mapcreator.here.com/mapcreato...4.322329,3,0,0 If you notice any discrepancies in your area, you can edit the map information to make it more accurate. HERE will review your changes for future updates. I’d like to take a closer look at your previous interractions with the Customer Care Team to see if I’m able to offer further assistance. Please PM your VIN, current mileage, and mobile phone number if you’re interested.

I got the EP in my car .. just because it made the interior looks so much more hi-tech and stylish The HD radio is nice .. and the Auto Climate is nice too. I subscribe to travel link too. Plus it works great with the Rear View Camera. My only complaints:

1) it does not show MP3 Album Art when playing from USB stick or iPod/Iphone ... that really sucks the big one!! Especially when MP3 files have the album art encoded right in the file.

2) There should be an option to remove the split home screen and allow a single large background image.

3) I don't use navigation that often .. but I do use the Map function to display traffic .. and I am not that impressed with Sirius Traffic information.

Overall I'm happy I ordered car with it.

This! My dad has the same nav unit in his escape and this always bothered me but I don't think you can change the layout.

I had been watching the map update situation for my 2012 Mustang. Did any of you guys read the PDF that dmhines helpfully posted for you (so you didn't have to search the Navteq site)? The Map V6 update was released May 2013 and v5.1 was back in April 2012. So I that looks to be once a year. Extrapolating from those dates puts the new update due around this June.

Looking at the new navigation.com website for an update (formerly Navteq). They have announced the new V7 update (2014) for the 2012 Mustang Nav system. Here is what is posted:

FORD / LINCOLN / MERCURY - NORTH AMERICA MAP UPDATE - V7.0X - INCLUDES GRACENOTE® DISC
This new map update is releasing soon! Order today and your update will ship beginning July 17th.
FREE SHIPPING* through September 30, 2014.

Here is a direct link (not sure if this will work, but here it is):

BTW - I just came back from a 2 week trip down to Utah, up to Wyoming and then back to Oregon. That map update was not posted a week ago when I checked, so must have just come out in the last couple days.

With the current map version I ran into a couple off ramp changes and some businesses that are gone/moved. Got a bit sidetracked when the GPS said take exit 128 and there was no exit 128 (they demolished it and put in an exit 129 a bit farther down the road).

I just placed my order. Note on webpage said free ground shipping, but at checkout it still charged me $3.95. We'll see what happens and when it shows up.

This thread had prompted me to order the update last week... version 6.0 for $199. Now I see that version 7.0 is being released for $50 less and I haven't even received my 6.0 order yet. I will be calling this morning to see what they will do for me. I'm hoping their customer service will be good enough to allow me to return the old version and get the new one.

I'm glad I saw this thread even though it turns out to have been an unnecessary complaint by the OP - they are still producing updates for the factory navigation systems.

I just spoke to HERE (formerly Navteq) customer service and they were very helpful. I have been approved for a return of the version 6.0 update (which I won't even receive until next Tuesday) and then they will refund the price (less shipping) and place the order for the upcoming version 7.0 update (which comes with free shipping). It has been discounted $50 until the end of August.

This update (version 7) applies to '10 through '12 Mustangs but I would assume that an update for '13 and '14 can't be far behind. It would hardly seem that the platform has been "abandoned" if they are still updating even earlier models.

Hey skramblr,

You're right; V7.0x has only been available since 7/01/14 from: www.Navigation.com Good eye!

For clairification on why you were charged for shipping, I suggest calling the HERE Support Center at: 888-628-6277.
