Name the 2012 V6 Performance Package Contest

For 2012, the Ford Mustang V6 Performance Package will get a new name, by engaging Facebook fans to submit their idea for the best name for the package that appeals to track-day fans and sports car aficionados alike.

The contest runs through mid-December, with the winner walking away with a two-year lease on a new 2012 Ford Mustang V6 with the Performance Package he or she helped name The Performance Package combines lightweight 305-horsepower all-aluminum V6, a 3:31 performance rear axle and Mustang GT-based suspension and braking components. Unique 19-inch wheels and Pirelli performance tires provide superb grip and aggressive appearance.

The Ford Mustang Facebook community is more than 940,000 strong, and they are being asked to put their heads together to come up with a name for the V6 Performance Package that gives Mustang an extra dose of handling performance. The contest to name the new package kicks off today on the Ford Mustang Facebook fan page.

"The V6 Performance Package is a great example of what's at the core ofMustang - fun, fast and affordable," said Amy Marentic, Ford group marketing manager. "It makes sense for us to continue the accessibility of the package by having our fans help name it, and it's a fun and unique way to engage enthusiasts."

Facebook fans can suggest a name on the Mustang Facebook page, and reach out to their friends in the social media world to help propel their pick to the top five names. A gallery on the Facebook page will let visitors see all of the choices that can be voted on. After the five most-voted names have been selected, Ford will choose the name that best shows off the personality of the package.

"We're utilizing the power of social media to not only talk about what a fantastic package this is, but to also let Mustang fans across the country share a piece of it," said Brian McClary, Ford social and emerging media specialist. "It's a nontraditional approach to naming a piece of brand that millions of people identify with."

The winner not only has the satisfaction of knowing his or her name will play a role in the iconic brand, but will also win a two-year lease on a 2012 Ford Mustang V6 with the Performance Package. Names can be submitted through mid-December, when the contest comes to a close.

Visitors to the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show also can get in on the fun by stopping at the Ford stand to submit their idea for the fast and fun package.

High-tech horsepower
The Performance Package takes advantage of the new 2011 Mustang 305-horsepower all-aluminum Ti-VCT V6 engine's lightweight and high-revving nature to deliver a nimble performance car equally at home on a road course or a road trip.

Borrowing from the Mustang GT, the Performance Package includes numerous suspension, braking and body stiffening upgrades to deliver unparalleled handling performance. That road-holding is helped by a near-equal front/rear weight distribution, providing exceptional transient response along with the car's slimmed-down curb weight of less than 3,500 pounds.

2012 Mustang Performance Package includes:
A 3.31 rear axle ratio for quicker off-the-line acceleration
Mustang GT coupe front and rear stabilizer bars
Mustang GT front struts and rear shocks/springs
Shelby GT500 rear lower control arm
Unique 19-inch wheels
Pirelli performance tires for improved grip
Mustang GT front and rear brake calipers with Performance Friction pads
A strut tower brace for increased body rigidity
Unique electronic stability control calibration with sport mode for performance driving
Unique badging

so basically they let you borrow the car for two years? I'm down. That would be perfect timing for the 2014 redesign...

That's hilarious, win a lease. Ford can't spare the $12k or whatever it costs them?

Not really clear, does it ask you for your information after you put the name you come up with for the car in the blank and click submit?

No kiddin, I figured they'd give the car away. But if I win I'll probably sell my 5.0 and drive the v6 until the 2014 comes out

Won't really cost Ford anything. They get the car back at lease end and you have to maintain full coverage insurance on it if you win.

I wonder if they will give you the option to buy the car at lease end?

And in the contest rules it actually says it is a 27 month lease.

I meant, why don't they just give the person the car? It's not like it costs them a lot of money. Still better than a kick in the pants I suppose

Why are people naming this package with something speed related. There is no increase in hp.

There are so many ridiculous entries so far, It is going to be tough to sort through all the garbage to come up with something appropriate.

And apparently it is to be decided by popular vote so it will come down to who can get enough of their "friends" to vote for whatever stupid name they come up with.

I have come up with a number of viable names for the package but don't know how they will fare and you can only submit one so I can't get them all out there for consideration.

I would call it a 370Z but I think this may be taken already.

Or on the more serious side you could call it a 67B for the order code.

The other thing is that not many have read the rules, it says a max of 22 characters for the name, quite a few have more than that.

Also, there are already over 700 pages of submissions, are we supposed to go through all of them trying to find the one name we like to vote on it? Hell, by the time the contest closes there will be thousands of pages of names.

Guess I will throw my suggestion out there and just let it go.

Made my submission, don't know if I would get the car even if I were to win. Ford credit has to do a credit check and qualify you for a "Red Carpet Lease" if you win, don't know if I could qualify.

If Ford is providing the lease for free I don't understand why you have to be able to qualify for the credit though???

Of course, whoever wins has to pay all the associated fees and taxes, including income tax for the value of the lease.

Maybe I shouldn't have entered...

By the way, the package name I entered is "TrackTech", just one from my list.

I entered, but I'm not eligible since I work at a dealership. I don't want the lease, just the name to be chosen (Sprint 305). Sprint was an optional package Ford offered on six-cylinder Mustangs way back when, so with everything else being retro, why not this one, too?

Yeah, I like it as just "Performance Package" myself but it looks like they want something easier, catchier.

The way they are doing it though, it will probably end up being something stupid.

Actually, what they REALLY should do is add the Brembos, and the Brembo Pkg wheels painted glossy black, and call it the V6 Brembo Package. Make the GT 13.2" brakes standard on the V6 too. Dammit.

My suggestions: Stallion or Thoroughbred package.

Keep the Pony/Stallion package for the V6 to keep with the theme.
