My/Our S197 versus the 2017 Camaro (side by side)
I got my airbag recall done today at my dealership, and they had a 17 Camaro sitting on the lot. It was an SS, with the 6.2L monster V8. It was however, an 8 speed autotragic tranny. Boo.
They offered to have me test drive her, but I politely declined. I told them I want to drive it when they have a rightful stick in it.
So these are my thoughts on the Camaro, based on LOOKS/APPEARANCE only.
I was surprised at how it looked in person. I was expecting to really NOT like it, but in a weird way, I didn't mind it - what's scarier? Maybe I kinda liked it lol. Shoot me now. Crucify me now. Aggggggghhhh.
The lines were still jumbled imo, but it was seemingly unapologetic for doing so. I think I found the front end view to be its best view.
I parked Marilyn next to her, and asked some of the sales folks what they thought, they all said they preferred my Stang better
Forgive the photos, they are iPhone and btw the cost of the Camaro is 47k with the autotragic tranny.
What do y'all think?????

Don't underestimate the automatic. 9 times out of 10 on the street it'll wax the stick car, just like in the Mustang.
I do like the refresh better than the Gen 5. It seems more coherent, though not fully so and still possessed of those high-waisted pants a la 70s fashion.

All I know is that I would NEVER buy an autotragic tranny for my toy car. For my daily and family car, yes, in fact both of mine are.
I don't care how much faster it is or easier it is to drive an autotragic, just my opinion, a manual tranny is ALWAYS MORE FUN for me. Just my humble 2 cents.

Great thread Burton.
I think it's "okay". I HATE the rear spoiler. I love the color. The interiors of the 5th and 6th gen Camaros still don't hold my attention. I think the side view is best for this car. Overall,.........a 7 out of 10.
Oh, and your car looks 100% better and meaner.

I do like the new Camaro. In fact if something happened to my S197, I'd have to replace it with the Camaro. I still can't stomach the S550, and I'm not willing to spend $60k on a GT350.
I'm excited to see the 1LE track pack in person, and test drive it. Unfortunately even stripped down 1SS trim with just the 1LE (which only comes as a Manual like God intended) will still be north of $45k.
The 1LE comes with some serious go fast bits, it may very well be worth $45k

The only problem I have with the new camaro is the panel lines stick out so much as they they dont flow or align with the body language/crease lines of the car, specially the hood and bumper lines.
Other then that I like it, but still would buy a scat pack, or one of the new TA 392, even the dodge charger scat pack, or new daytona is really triggering my WANT.
At this point in time I think I will wait it out and see how replacement for the challenger comes together, but that will be 2019-2020 until we might see a concept or some spy shots., and my car will be worth sh_t by then....

I agree about the hideous spoiler. Other than that I think they look pretty mean, but the SS emblems look like an afterthought. "HMMMMMMM we made the upper grille to short in the front and the taillights are now ungodly huge on the rear panel, lets just throw these badges at the car and see where they stick". I don't understand why they don't just replace the front and rear bowties with the SS emblems like they used to in the old days...... Dear GM, take a hint from Ford and stop putting the oversized bowties on the front and back of EVERY car. The "Chevy" Camaro can be identified by sight just like the Mustang without all the crappy oversized badges on it.....

I agree...ever since the S197 came Mustang was easily identifiable without a Ford blue oval or the word Mustang anywhere on the car. I think the Camaro could get away with a similar approach.

As for the spoiler, eh, that would be easily changed right?

Sit in it. Your opinion of it might change. I found the interior to be cramped and claustrophobic with terrible sight lines out the back. In contrast, I rented a new Mustang GT and I fit in it just fine, and I did not have the same issues seeing out of it like I did with the Camaro. It is easier to see out of my 2001 Mustang GT convertible then it is with the new Camaro. BTW - I am 6'2" so I need a car with plenty of room.

It appears the marketplace agrees with you around the "new" Camaro looking almost exactly like the old one - sales are way down and the Challenger is actually outselling the Camaro now: http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2016/08...-2016-ytd.html.

Aesthetically the side profile is its best shot. A smoother, cleaner transition from the rear fenders into the roof sides would be nice rather than the “passenger cabin placed on a table top” look over the rear haunches. The rear shot is just not good at all. It looks like an overweight woman wearing leotards. The front shot is only OK. The Gen 5 front was better by a long shot.
I can’t speak to the performance or interior since I’ve neither sat in, nor driven one.

I would have thought having the ability to spank the S550's at the track would have increased the sales of Gen 6 Camaros...especially the SS model.

For others, faster STOCK doesn't matter because they don't plan to keep it stock.
The group that want it because it is faster stock vs stock is actually pretty small, apparently.

Ever since the redesign was first introduced with the transformers movie, the headlight gap in the front grill has gotten narrower and narrower. Take a front-on picture of each iteration since that point, flip them really fast front to back and you'll swear it looks like the **** thing is trying its hardest to fall asleep. You can practically hear it snoring already.
First thing I thought when I saw the side shot was, "wow, that looks a lot like an S550."
