My car wouldn't start on New Year's Eve

I have a 12" GT and this happened 12/31 at 8pm. I drove about 5 miles to my girl friend's apartment to pick her up. She was taking a long time to get ready so I turned the car off. After about 10 minutes she came down and I tried to start the car back up. The car wouldn't start, I even borrowed jumper cables from another car to try and start it. I had the car towed back to my house. This morning I tried to start the car again, both with jumper cables and without, it wouldn't start. Then my father and I rolled the car back and forth about 5-10 feet in neutral by pushing, I get back in the car turn the ignition and the car starts and now it starts perfectly. Anyone know what happened? and if I need a new battery, starter motor, or anything? I live in New York City by the way and it's been below 32 degrees here, my guess is that has something to do with it. I am out of my 3 year bumper to bumper warranty, I only have the 5 year power train warranty remaining.

That's a head scratcher for sure but my initial guess would be something related to the neutral safety switch.

Did you take your battery in to get tested if it's ok?

your talking about the switch that doesn't allow you to start the car unless the clutch is depressed?

Correct. Clutch pedal or brake pedal depending on what kind of car you have.

Could be the fuel pump. Buddy had an expedition that would do this and pushing it causes the gas in the tank to splash against the pump causing it to function again.
He had the pump change and all is well.

I'm going to say 'the battery'. These 2011 and up go crazy if the amps are not right.

Take it down to your local parts (advance, autozone etc.) store. They'll do a load test for the battery and starter "for free". Let us know what they say and how you fix it

When the car started did it crank lazy? Also did you try push starting it?

Like everyone says first step is to test your battery.

Interesting that everyone has an opinion about what was wrong - without even having enough details. The first questions everyone should have first asked?

1) What do you mean "car wouldn't start"? Does the engine turn over or does it endlessly crank without starting?

2) If not turning over - Is it an automatic or manual transmission?

3) If it is turning over - does it sound normal or cranking over slowly?

Was there gas in it?

Were you using your house key instead of the car key?

Were you pressing the brake pedal instead of the accelerator?

Was a fat friend in the car immobilizing it?

Were you stopped by Stormtroopers asking about missing droid?

Lol quit busting our *****!

The engine doesn't turn over, I just hear "click, click, click" endlessly until I let go of the key. I have a manual. I even tried starting the car with the gas pedal pushed in. The car had a half tank of gas and it was about 25 degrees F outside when this happened. The car starts and drives perfectly fine now. I drove it today and everything is good.

That sounds alot like your battery is bad. I am 90% sure its the battery. That clicking happens when there is not enough juice left on the battery. Also make sure the terminals are tight and free of acid.

By push starting i mean you let the car roll in gear and pop the clutch in 2nd gear and car will start most likely.

Clicking when you turn the key. I like the suggestion it could be the battery, but I think that is ruled out because you tried to jump it. I've that that problem with a car when the starter was going bad (hit it with a hammer and it would start working, probably due to the bendix was sticking - couldn't turn the flywheel until it released). It would work fine most of the time, but occasionally get stuck. Also had a similar problem with bad connection at the battery terminal.
