Mustang July 2011 Sales Down
Mustang sales are way down because Ford is starving us dealers for inventory. Factory isn't building hardly any Mustangs, even when we submit special orders for customers. V6's are super hard to get and GT's (especially MT82's) are like pulling teeth to get. I think Ford is trying to address all of the concerns we're hearing about (i.e. MT82, #8 Cylinder, etc.), so they're intentionally keeping production at a snail's pace.
I've talked to my local dealer twice in the past few months and they are begging for cars from Ford. The only thing they can get in ample supply is trucks. But the new cars they just cant get a any supply. I have never seen a car lot look so empty and this was the case even back in February.
Same by us, The dealer told me the area has been without new Mustangs for quite a while.
I just did a search of the 5 closest dealers to me . . . 2 v6 premiums both coupes, 2 gt premiums 1 coupe, 1 vert, and 4 yes 4 coupe GT500's. Those are all 2012's none of these dealers have any 2011's.
The dealer I ordered from has a GT500 on the lot and that's it. He just found out he got another allocation an additional GT500. Also, only 1 of these dealer got a Boss that I've seen.

Hmm, that would be the dumbest possible reason. Dealers dont make much on car sales they make money on repairs. Even warranty repairs. Ford pays them to fix the car. Its not that dealers are not ordering its that the factory is not making them. Its the same situation with the Focus. They are way down even though demand is high. Ford cut back on production due to part shortages as far as that car goes. The 2011\2012 Mustang has never been is high supply from the time it debuted until now. But today the factory is making even less.
I went to several dealers in early July to buy a premium GT convertible and none of them would order a car for me. They all said they couldn't get any Mustangs and didn't know when they would be able to. I found one on the lot of one of the dealers and he wanted MSRP for it. I finally went to one of the largest dealers in the area and they were able to order me one. The build date is supposed to be 8/9 and I have a VIN for it. I'm not sure why the other dealers couldn't get me a car but it seems if you can find the right dealer they should be able to order one. I've also noticed there are plenty of GT500s on the lots.

I think the problem is a perfect storm of all the things that people have mentioned. Low inventory, low rebates but, like last year I still think the biggest reason for the Camaro outselling the Mustang is that it's still the new kid on the block. When the new for 2005 Mustang came out sales were huge for the first 3 model years before it started to slow down. As much as I love the 2010-up Mustang is still looks very similar to the 2005-09 cars. Most non-Mustang fanatics wouldn't notice the difference between an 05 and a 10 model. The Camaro on the other hand is still fresh in the eye of most of the public.
With times being tough many people looking to buy a Mustang may look to save some money and buy a used Mustang. With Camaro fans the market for used Camaros is much lower since the last gen car dates back to 2002. Perhaps people looking to buy a 5.0 are settling for used low mile 05-09 cars for a fraction of the price. My brother was looking to buy a new 5.0 last Summer until he got the deal of a lifetime on a loaded 2010 GT..... just my .02

You've had camaro buyers that have been saving for the last 8-9 years for a new camaro...The F150 stealing 5.0 engines. The supply is just a combination of everything. The average Joe Car Shopper probably doesn't know about the MT82 problems, or the #8 cylinder problem when modifying the tune. People want mustangs but there just arent any out there. People that don't want to order don't have any selection to pick from. And the ones that order, who knows when or if you car is going to be built. ANd all of Ford's SUVs posted nice sales increase numbers. Unfortunately they make more money for Ford than the mustang does.

The inventory is the issue, whatever the underlying reason is.
Checked 5-closest Ford dealers for Mustangs:
49 Mustangs (30 are V6's, 16 are V8 GT, 3 Bosses, 10 Shelby GT500's)
Checked same 5-closest Ford dealers for F-series Trucks:
539 F-series (260 are V6's, 279 are V8's)
Compare that to a SINGLE local Chevrolet dealer:
68 Camaro's (53 are V6's, 15 are V8's)
168 Silverado Trucks
I think it is obvious why Mustang sales are down:
Inventory is lower than normal
You have competing cars now, the Mustang enjoyed a few years to itself
The body style in general is growing long in the tooth at 7-years old
The package options were designed to drive up the price, pricing them higher than previous years
The base model V6 now has too much power, parents aren't purchasing them for 16-18 yr old kids
Mustang enthusiasts know that in less than 3-years, an all new Mustang is coming
etc...

Weird thing is how many GT500's seem to be out there . . . I thought their production was more limited than the 5.0's but it seems almost even. Wonder what deals will be out there on 2012 GT500's once the 2013 comes out.
It's most likely directly related to a push to get the F150 out. Fords trying to get their CAFE rating up by pushing out one of it's most popular trucks with these new engines. Shortages of the engines are being said due to realignment of supply to the F150 factories therefore pushing more of the trucks out and less mustangs.
