MGW Shifter

I have my MGW shifter on order for my 2014 GT. For those of you that have installed - what is the best way to do the under the car work - ramps on the front, Jack stands on the front or all four corners jackstands. I need to get a low profile jack but I figured I'd ask here before getting it to see how the best way is. I've watched the video on the MGW site and it doesn't look too hard other than the underneath access. Of course it always looks easier until you do it yourself when things don't go according to plan.

Thanks
Scott

Jack and stands, basic hand tools and maybe 1 1/2 to 2hrs. I had all four corners in the air, just to make it easier.

I rounded up a Harbor Freight low profile jack yesterday although I probably could have gotten a better price for it if I was patient since it was $142 and people have gotten them for less than $100 in February. I also got the 2 year extended warranty incase I got a bad one. Harbor Freight is one of the places where an extended warranty actually pays. I also messed up my right hand getting it in the cart -it is heavy - but that should make it stable too. Hopefully my hand will be healed by the time the shifter gets here. Once the shifter is in, I'll have a good idea of how easy or hard it will be to do a full exhaust upgrade vs an axle back. I'd like to do the suspension too but that's beyond my skill level so I have to find a place to do it. ( or talk a friend into giving me a hand). I get nervous around taking brakes apart - I had a bad experience doing the rears on a Taurus SHO.

You really don't take any brake parts off in the rear, except unbolt the one bolt holding the line to the body. Up front you pull the caliper and with a metal coat hanger hang it up in the wheel well out of the way. If you were in the VA area I could give you a hand. I have installed everything myself from cold air to supercharger and susp. in a one car garage on jack stand and basic hand tools.

Put in the spring as suggested, don't leave it out (optional). Be prepared for a much firmer experience, it will loosen up over time. Depending on your climate, it will be notchy when cold, so row it through 1-6 3 or 4 times before driving. You also need to get used to the effort required to make *sure* you are in reverse when pushing down and up.

Have a buddy help hand you tools, will make the job go a lot faster.

I have a coworker that did his suspension himself. Once I have the shifter in and get comfortable taking things apart I might see if i can get him involved with the suspension. Its mostly the front calipers I'm a little nervous about. Once I do it once and see how things come apart and go back together I'll be more comfortable doing things like this. The MGW website has a very good video - I've already watched it three times so I don't think i'll have much trouble once i get the car up on jackstands. I'll keep my I-Pad close by handy just incase.

When in doubt, take lots of pictures for reference in case you forget something and take your time. Make sure you have all the tools in place before you start as well so you don't have to go looking for anything while you are in the middle of the process.

Ahhhhh another MGW soon to be convert. Congrats. One of the best mods you can do.

I did mine with front ramps and a buddy and lots of booze. Done in 2 hours. Good luck. It was a lot of fun.

This reminds me... After 5000 or so miles, I will be posting an update or review of the MGW.... Thanks for reminding me

Thanks, It looks like we're going down similar paths - my last car was a 08 Infiniti G37S couple cousin to the Z. Once I get the shifter in I might go the Borla route next , just haven't decided if it will be axle back or cat back. Once I'm under the car and get a good look up close with the H=pipe, I'll make up my mind.
