Metallic vs. non-metallic tint?

I'm going to get the windows tinted on my car tomorrow, and the one question that remains is whether or not to pay the $30 upcharge for the metallic tint. I've had all of my vehicles tinted in the past, and none were done with metallic film (never had the option at any of the shops I've been at). Is it worth it? Are there any drawbacks, like decreased reception and interference with devices? Discuss.

I have no idea about the interference aspect never thought of it before .. But i have seen some well done color tint and a few silver tint jobs that really looked nice as well as the typical homemade tint the has 40k lines and bubbles in it LOL ..
What color are you looking at doing ?

I'm going to do 20% on the car. I had that on my Speed6 and loved the look:

Had chrome tint on my 04 Sonic Blue stang, and loved it. It goes really nice, depending on your paint and color scheme. I'd say with the Kona Blue its a definite go. You may need some other exterior accents to help with the look though.

I had the metallic tint on my old red '96 dually and really liked it. It wasn't like chrome or anything but when the light hit it just right it looked dark silver instead of just smoke color from the outside.

It's supposed to last longer and block more heat from the sun.

Definitely not doing chrome on mine. Just a nice, deep charcoal tint.

I think I'm going to opt for the metallic stuff. Sounds like the upcharge is well worth.

I'm surprised that there would be an upcharge. Metallic tint is next to the bottom of 3M's catalog and is less expensive than their premium non-metallic film or their color-stable carbon film. If you really want the best, check out their ceramic films - they look the same but the ceramic makes a significant difference in the amount of heat through the windows.

Metallic film will cause some signal degradation but for the most part it's nothing to worry about. You may find that your cell phone drops out a little sooner in fringe areas. The biggest problem is with a radar detector mounted high on the windshield behind a tint strip - metallic film will noticeably reduce its range.

Thanks Chris. They are using Johnson film. I tried to go through their site but they have a variety of film options and don't clearly identify them in some hierarchy. I'll have to look at the stuff in person when I go tomorrow, then go from there. If the difference is negligible going to the metallic film, then I'll probably just opt for it.

Thanks Chrissy. I want mine a tad darker than that, but it looks good overall. Do you notice a difference in heat during the summer with the metallic tint?

When I had my car tinted ,I was told that the metallic based tint interfered with the electronic items such as ipod, synch, etc, so I went with a carbon based tint which I acutally like, 20% and I can see better out of it at night compared to the metallic tint I got on my 05 GT

Wish I could get away with 15% all around. From what I've heard the cops in VA are ****s about tinting, especially in the Norfolk area. Can't wait to see how your car looks with it.
