A little disappointed

I have a 2014 v-6 premium ordered. My dealer called me on Wedsday and gave me my VIN, and an estimated arrival date! I am really excited about this car. I have built it on Ford's web site probably 20 times. However, I have never figured out any way to build it with the 3.31 gears, which I desperately wanted. except by getting the performance package. This morning, I was going through some info, it appears that the gears are in fact available as a stand alone option, code 453. I even went back to to Ford site and built it again, to see where I might have missed it, but still find nothing! I saw the choice once when I built a '13, but never with the '14. Obviously, it wasn't a deal breaker, because I ordered my car, but I sure hate that I couldn't just click on the option when I built the car, and have them come installed, covered under warranty and programmed into the computer from the beginning. I am really going to love this car, but that is gonna gnaw at me for a long time!

The standard gear is a 2.73. Its not a terrible gear, but, I feel the 3.31 is much more ideal for me. The funny thing is that it is an extra cost option (even though it shouldn't be) that I was more than willing to pay for. I am sure that I will love my new Mustang, but I could have loved it even more! LOL.

Your dealer uses a different online system to order vehicles. Did you ask for the optional 3.31 rear axle when you placed your order?

No, believe it or not, we sat down at a desk, he pulled up the Ford site on the computer, and we built the car just like you do at home. He printed it up and took it to his boss. As I said, if its on the Ford site at all, its well hidden, so I didn't think it was available anymore without the performance package. Therefore, I didn't ask for it. What process they used in ordering the car is a mystery to me.

Wow. He must be new, u can call and have things changed up until its made. Try calling and talking to his boss, explain your car was made on The freakin ford website, doesn't get worse than that.

Hey, I guess its worth a shot. Maybe I wil get lucky on that. I must admit, I was more than a little surprised when they pulled up the same consumer site that I used.

You should keep your car as is, and have FRPP 3.73 gears installed before you take delivery. Have the Procal tune done as well. This is the only way, and will be much better than 3.31s!

Yep, you have to have the dealer order the different gears and any other things you may what. You won't find them on the web site, Mine should be here next week, I'm hoping.

My dealer installed my 3.73 gears. Just have your dealer install some 3.55 or 3.73 gears. They will also set everything so your speedometer will be right. Just saying.....

While I would love the 3.73 gears, fuel economy is a very real concern for me. I drive about 100 miles each day, with the majority of it being at 75mph on the turnpike. To justify this purchase to myself, I had to select a configuration that would exceed my current car's economy. If its too late for me to update my order, I suppose I will drive with the 2.73 gears for a little while before I upgrade, just to be certain.

Fuel economy schmuel economy. If you go 70 on your commute, the results while *not* commuting will be worth it

I had a similar scenario happen to me when I went to make my purchase. The problem was my sales guy I had been working with was assisting another customer and passed me off to some DB who did not know his *** from a hole in the ground who insisted I could not order the Recaro's on a base Mustang. I kindly told him how much of an idiot he was and walked out. Moments later the original sales guy I had been working with chased me down and apologized profusely. He promised he would set it straight, which he did, because I ended up getting exactly what I wanted for the exact price I was willing to pay. In the end, they did me right.

I would suggest you ask to speak to the GM and tell him you know for a fact you can order the car that way.

I lost about 2 mpg going from the stock 2.73 to 3.31. I used to get 28-29 mpg on I-95 with cruise set at 75mph. I now get 26-27 mpg in the same conditions but it was worth it. The car is still not a huge performer but it's a lot more fun and still gets better mileage than I would have expected.

Mine's a convertible so your mileage will probably be better overall (less weight) but the difference between the gears should be similar.
