That side test is an NCAP/NHTSA video, not IIHS. I don't know why the side airbag didn't deploy. That's pretty weird/concerning.
But if you look at the IIHS results, you'll see that the Mustang vert is safer than a 3-Series vert. Also, the Mustang coupe basically qualifies as a "Top Pick" for protection of the FRONT occupants. Perfect scores in the front, side, and rear tests. It is only "let down" by not having good protection for rear-seat occupants in the side-impact test.
The 2010+ Mustang coupe is an exceptionally safe car for the driver and front passenger, if you analyze the results as I have. If you really dig into the data, you will see that the Mustang preserves something like -23cm of crush space in the side impact. That means the crushing force stopped -23cm short of the driver's seat center line. This is pretty much better than ANY other mid-size coupe/sedan they've ever tested!

My 3rd Mustang gave its life for me in a horrible accident back in 1994 (it was an '89 5.0L Sport LX that I had bought brand new). I've been a believer in how safe Mustangs are ever since.
