I'm coming up on 17,000 miles, and while I'm still showing plenty of tread all around, I'd like to begin researching what I plan to replace my tires with when the time comes.

I've heard nothing but great things about the NT555R's, so I'm highly considering getting those. Right now, I'm looking to find out just how wide I can go, both front and rear, on the stock (base) 18" x 8" wheels on my '11 GT.

Once we get past that..perhaps you lot can offer me a bit more advise. I do daily drive my car, that unfortunately can sometimes include heavy rain, and if it catches me off guard I've had to drive home from work in the snow. Usually I drive the F-150 if I know it's going to snow, but sometimes - especially this winter - things happen.

Would NT555R's be a bad choice for a daily driver? If so, can anyone make any suggestions? The stock P-Zero's provide absolutely no grip in first, second or third gear - in fact, driving in 15* temps the other day, I had the back end step out coming into fourth gear, too . I need something sticky!

In the interest of full disclosure, I don't visit the track often. For this reason, having a second set of wheels/tires just for track days isn't in my plan, so.

 

If you need grip below 40 degrees then Winter Tires is the only choice. The P-Zeros are good for summer but below 40 degrees they are useless. Since you have a truck for heavy snow I recommend Performance Winter Tires.

 

I would not say the stock tires on a non brembro stock gt are useless. I have driven my car through snow this winter with some sand bags in the back and managed fine. Keep in mind they are all season tires on the stock gt not the same as summer only on the brembro and performance package on the v6.

You are right. I assumed he was talking about the P-Zero summer tires However if he wants better grip below 40 degrees my suggestion still applies.

 

yeah, the "P-Zero Nero" are all weather, the "P-Zero" are summer only

Can anyone answer the OP's original question -- how wide can he go on the 8" wheels? I'm wondering about that too . . . I bet it is not much wider than the stock 235's

 

Sorry, I should have specified. I was only using that 15* comment as an example. Even in the dead heat of the summer, first second and most of third are completely useless on the stock P-Zero's. Ideally I'd like to get something really sticky, but am also open to suggestions that are better suited for an all-year type of thing.

 

No big deal, and like Kona said even in warm weather the stock gt tires lack grip with the power of these cars . Same reason I am looking for better grip.

 

That thread was exactly what I needed! So it looks like I'll be going with a 255/50/18. Now the question still stands at - which tire!

 

You should think about going with 255-45-18. At 60 m.p.h. on your speedometer you are really doing 59.5 m.p.h.

it was tough for me to pick a tire also. i was looking to keep it inexpensive, that limited me as far as size went. Hope that review helps.

 

I've driven my stock gt all winter in Northeast Pa, they are not useless but not very effective either haha
